Sell your car in Carson City: running, junk or moving to California
Pickup comes to wherever the car is parked, from a side street in Carson City to a ranch driveway in Carson Valley, once you accept an instant offer made online. If it has quit running, city code allows it only 24 hours on a public street, so a driveway, yard or garage is the better place for it to wait.

The DMV office in Carson City
- Weekdays, and mostly by appointment. The Nevada DMV office at 555 Wright Way is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and has its own VIN inspection station (office list). Nearly every service there needs an appointment booked online.
- Two errands need no slot. License plate drop-off and VIN inspections are on the DMV's short list of services done without an appointment (appointment rules).
Where we pick up around Carson City
We buy cars across Carson City's 89701, 89703 and 89706, and pickup goes past the city line to Dayton, Mound House, Silver Springs, Virginia City and Washoe Valley. In Douglas County, the route takes in Indian Hills, Minden, Gardnerville and Genoa. Ranch driveways and gravel roads are part of it.
Old battery or used oil to get rid of? Spare car batteries, used motor oil and old antifreeze can go to the Carson City Landfill, 4000 Flint Drive, for free recycling, Monday to Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Carson City Public Works).
Cash for your car in Carson City
Carson City code counts a car as junk once it can't move under its own power, or can't legally be driven because a part such as the engine, transmission, wheels or windshield is missing or broken (CCMC 8.08.030). No one may keep more than two junk or unregistered vehicles on a street or property in the city. Extras are allowed only behind a fence or inside a garage, where nobody standing at a property line can see them, and farm and ranch property is exempt (CCMC 8.08.110).
If the city sends a notice and the car stays put, the same section lets the city have it towed, and the owner, any lender on the car and the landowner can all be held liable for the tow and storage costs. Cash for junk cars in Carson City avoids that: the offer covers old, damaged and non-running cars, and pickup comes to the car where it sits. Our junk car page explains that kind of sale.
When the part that failed is the engine or the transmission, our guides to selling a car with a blown engine or head gasket and selling a car whose transmission slips or has no reverse weigh fixing it against selling it as is. After a crash, see selling an accident-damaged car, or selling a car your insurer totaled if the claim ended in a total loss.
Taking the car over the state line?
Nevada's emissions test covers cars based in the urban areas of Clark or Washoe county (Nevada DMV), so a car kept in Carson City skips it. California doesn't. As of September 2026, its DMV says a car brought in from another state must be registered within 20 days of becoming a resident (California DMV), and a 1976-or-newer gasoline car needs a smog certification from a California smog station plus a vehicle verification (How To 9).
If the car isn't worth that, selling it here before the move is the other choice. Moved here with a California title you never switched? See our guide to selling with an out-of-state title.
Parking tickets and tows in Carson City
- •A city parking ticket is $25 for most violations, or $15 for staying past a posted time limit. Unpaid after 30 days, a penalty equal to the fine is added. After 45 days a $15 service charge is added and the debt can go to a collection agency (CCMC 10.24.365)
- •The registered owner is liable for those fines even when someone else was driving, so a ticket on a car still in your name is still yours (CCMC 10.24.370)
- •The Sheriff’s Office volunteer patrol starts the removal of abandoned vehicles, and vehicle problems can be reported on the Sheriff's traffic hotline, 775-283-7882 (volunteers, hotline)
Asked by Carson City sellers
Can I park my car on a Carson City street with a For Sale sign in it?
No. City code bars parking on a public street for the main purpose of displaying a vehicle for sale, and a car that runs can't be stored on the street for more than 168 hours, which is seven days (CCMC 10.24.090). Keep the sign in your own driveway, or skip the sign and start with the online offer.
A deputy put a notice on my car. Can I still sell my junk car in Carson City?
You can, but the notice starts a clock. City code treats a car as abandoned once it hasn't moved for more than seven days in a row and looks deserted. A deputy who believes that attaches the notice as a parking citation, and if the car is still there seven days later, the Sheriff's Office can have it removed for storage or disposal (CCMC 8.08.030, 8.08.110). Start the offer the day you see the notice, and mention it when you describe the car.
Can I get a last-minute Wednesday DMV appointment in Carson City?
Not at this office. The Nevada DMV opens last-minute Wednesday appointments at 8 p.m. the night before at its metro offices, and Carson City is the one it leaves out (Nevada DMV appointments). Book ahead online instead.
Who at the DMV can look into a title record that doesn't match my paperwork?
The Nevada DMV's Title Research unit, in the DMV's headquarters building on Wright Way. Its hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the number for Reno and Carson City callers is (775) 684-4810 (Nevada DMV titles). If the title itself is lost, our guide to selling a car without a title covers what to do.
How do I get the crash report for my damaged car in Carson City?
If the Carson City Sheriff's Office took it, ask at 911 E. Musser Street, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The owner or driver listed on the report may get a copy, usually 5 to 10 business days after it's taken, with a valid government ID (Sheriff’s Office FAQ).
Nevada's title and plate steps, including the online resale notice, are on our Nevada selling guide.
