Getting a car ready for the Los Angeles VPC
- A quarter tank or less. Federal rules for cars carried by ship say the fuel tank may not be more than one-fourth full.
- Clean inside and out. Military OneSource says the outside must be washed and free of dirt, and the inside dry-vacuumed.
- No cracked glass. The Los Angeles VPC asks that the windshield and windows have no cracks, so replace a cracked one before you go.
- Documents sent ahead. The VPC urges you to send your paperwork before the appointment, for shipping or storage, so it can check nothing is missing.
Where we pick up around North Las Vegas

Street parking has a limit. City code caps parking on any street at 72 hours. A car that has been in violation for more than 24 hours can be towed, and the tow is billed to the owner. A car on the street that can't run, or has no current registration or plate, can be towed right away (Municipal Code 10.48.080, 10.61.030 and 10.61.050).
What happens to the car when you leave Nellis
PCS orders can come with the right to ship or store one car at government expense. For a move between two bases in the lower 48, Military OneSource says getting the car there is largely your own cost, so the car is yours to drive there or sell; your transportation office can tell you if an exception applies. For an overseas move, the government will generally ship one car if the new base allows it. If you store the car instead, storage under the Global POV Contract means you never pay monthly storage out of pocket. Shipped or stored, the car is turned in at a vehicle processing center (VPC), and Military OneSource says to contact the one nearest your duty station. The official list has none in Nevada; the nearest to Nellis is in Los Angeles.
Selling means a firm offer and pickup on a day you choose before you fly. Cash for your car in North Las Vegas
North Las Vegas code has rules for a car being stored at a house. It has to sit in a paved driveway, rest on inflated tires, show current plates, and keep its windows, bumpers, tires and body panels intact. Storing an unregistered, junked or dismantled car that misses those terms isn't allowed. If an officer believes a car has been abandoned, a notice goes on it, and if it isn't moved or fixed within 72 hours, the city can have it removed (Municipal Code 10.48.100).

Can I park my car on the street with a for-sale sign in North Las Vegas?
No. City code makes it unlawful to park a vehicle on any public road to display it for sale. On private property, such as a store parking lot, you need the owner's express permission first (Municipal Code 10.48.090). Your own driveway is the simple place to show it.
My car won't run and it's parked at my apartment complex. How long can it stay?
No more than seven days in a row, if it obviously can't run and can be seen from a street or alley. After that it breaks city code, and once a warning notice is put on it, the city can have it towed 72 hours later (Municipal Code 10.61.020 and 10.61.030). Pickup can come to the complex's lot.
Is there somewhere on Nellis to work on the car before I sell or ship it?
The base Auto Hobby Shop, 5982 Depot Road, Bldg. 840, rents bays with lifts and shop tools, from $8 an hour depending on availability. It's open Tuesday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call 702-652-0284 first.
Will I need to go to a DMV office, and which ones are closest?
Maybe not. The Nevada DMV says most vehicle transactions can now be done online. If you do go, its list of metro offices has none inside North Las Vegas. The closest are East Sahara, 2621 E. Sahara Ave., and North Decatur, 7170 N. Decatur Blvd., both in Las Vegas. Each is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, by appointment only.
