If a Reno parking ticket follows the car
- Get a receipt for the plates. The Nevada DMV office in Reno, at 9155 Double Diamond Parkway, works by appointment, with weekday hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. plus Saturdays until 4 p.m. (DMV office list). Handing in plates needs no appointment: the DMV takes them at the information desk (DMV plate surrender).
- Keep the bill of sale with it. Reno Parking Services presumes that whoever the DMV lists as owner on the date of a ticket parked the car. Its Declaration of Non-Ownership asks for the sale date, the plate number or VIN, the DMV Bill of Sale, and either that plate receipt or a current registration showing the plates moved to another car (City of Reno form).

In Reno, a car that no longer runs must stay out of sight. Reno Code Enforcement says any junk or inoperative vehicle on private property must be fully screened behind a fence or kept inside a garage. The front yard is off limits for every car: vehicles belong on the paved driveway, or on a gravel, paver or concrete pad beside it (City of Reno Code Enforcement).
A worn clutch or a failing transmission lowers the offer, but you can skip the repair; the number is for the car as it sits. Stripping it for parts has its own rule in Reno: a vehicle can't be in major disassembly, or be stripped or dismantled, in view of the public, so that work belongs in a garage.
Smog can strand a car too. Reno, Sparks and Washoe Valley are in the DMV's emissions testing area; Incline Village and Crystal Bay are exempt (Nevada DMV testing areas). There, a car that fails has to be repaired and pass a retest, or qualify for a waiver, before it can be registered, and Reno doesn't allow junk or unregistered cars to be stored on the street. - •Reno Code Enforcement generally allows 30 days between a first notice and a citation. Residential citations then climb from $100 to $250 to $500, and a case left open can end in a lien recorded with the Washoe County Recorder's Office. - •A DMV Now kiosk opened on May 20, 2026, in a grocery store at 175 Lemmon Drive. It takes cards only and can renew a registration, which is useful if the car has to stay registered until it sells (Nevada DMV release)

Can the car wait on the street in Reno, Sparks or the county?
Inside Reno, a car stored on the street for more than 48 hours gets reported to the city's Parking Enforcement (Reno Code Enforcement). In Sparks, parking on a street for longer than 48 hours is unlawful (Sparks Police). In county areas such as Sun Valley, the Sheriff's Office says anyone may park on a public street, but a car reported as abandoned gets a 72-hour warning tag and can then be towed if it hasn't moved (Washoe County Sheriff).
Can I show the car for sale on a vacant lot in Reno?
No. Reno Code Enforcement says a vehicle can't be displayed for sale on an empty lot, because vacant lots must be kept clean, safe and free of blight (City of Reno).
What does Reno's snow plan ask of a car parked on the street?
To be moved off the street where possible before a forecast storm. The plows push snow to the side of the road and leave a berm across driveways, which the city doesn't clear, and private HOA streets and cul-de-sacs are the HOA's to plow.
