Sell your car in Rochester, on your timeline, not the market's

Rochester runs on arrivals and departures — residents, fellows, and traveling staff cycle through Mayo every year, and plenty leave town with one car too many. When you're selling on a deadline, a firm number and a pickup date beat three weeks of Marketplace no-shows.

The Med City market

A city built on churn

No other Minnesota city turns over its drivers like Rochester. Mayo Clinic employed nearly 41,000 people here as of 2021, and the residency calendar guarantees a wave of departures every June — new physicians heading to fellowships and first jobs in other states, each with an apartment to empty and, often, a car to unload. Relocation sales aren't the exception in this market; they're the standing order.

The churn isn't slowing down, either. Destination Medical Center — a 20-year, $5.6 billion public-private build-out and the largest economic development initiative in state history — is past its halfway point, which keeps new arrivals flowing in behind everyone who leaves. If you're on the departing side of that equation, speed is worth more than the last hundred dollars, and a done deal beats a maybe every time.

Local pickup

Where we pick up around Rochester

Pickup isn't limited to the city limits — Byron, Stewartville, Kasson, Pine Island, Zumbrota, Chatfield, Eyota, and Oronoco are all routine stops for us. Rochester's core ZIPs are 55901, 55902, 55904, and 55906, and pickup reaches the 559xx towns around Olmsted and Dodge counties, from Byron (55920) to Stewartville (55976).

Start the paperwork before the moving truck is booked. If the title is buried in a box or gone entirely, order the duplicate now — a deputy registrar office can print one the same day, while the mail-in route takes weeks you may not have. The sale itself takes an afternoon; hunting a lost Minnesota title from your new apartment in Boston does not.

The churn, quantified

The two institutions driving the churn

  • Destination Medical Center is a 20-year, $5.6 billion public-private partnership — the largest economic development initiative in Minnesota's history — now past its halfway point (KTTC on DMC's 10-year mark)
  • Mayo Clinic employed nearly 41,000 people in Rochester as of 2021, out of more than 73,000 across its whole system (Mayo employment figures)
Rochester questions

Asked by Rochester sellers

How fast can you pick up a car in Rochester?

Usually within days of an accepted offer, and we schedule around your calendar rather than ours. If you have a hard departure date — a lease ending, a flight out — say so up front and we'll work backward from it.

Can I sell my car in Rochester before I move out of state?

Yes, and you should — a Minnesota sale is far simpler while you're still standing in Minnesota. Sign the title over before you leave, file the Notice of Sale, and the whole thing is closed out before your forwarding address kicks in.

I'm finishing residency at Mayo — should I sell my car or ship it?

Run both numbers. Get a shipping quote for your destination, get our offer, and factor in what replacing the car costs where you're headed. For older, high-mileage cars the sale usually wins comfortably; for newer ones it genuinely varies, and we'd rather you do that math than guess.

Do you buy cars in Byron, Stewartville, or the smaller towns?

We do — the whole ring of towns around Olmsted and Dodge counties is in range, including Kasson, Pine Island, Zumbrota, Chatfield, Eyota, and Oronoco. Small-town pickups get the same free scheduling as Rochester proper.

What if my buyer never transfers the title after I move away?

This is exactly what Minnesota's Notice of Sale exists for. File it with DVS within 10 days of the sale — buyer's name, address, license number, sale date — and Minn. Stat. 168A.10 generally shields you even if the buyer sits on the transfer for months. Just know the notice protects you; it doesn't finish the buyer's paperwork for them.

If your title vanished somewhere between apartments, Minnesota replaces it for $21.50 by mail with form PS2067A — details on our Minnesota selling guide.

Moving-week checklist

Clear the title before you clear the apartment

  • Locate the title early — moving week is too late. A replacement takes form PS2067A and can be printed same-day at a deputy registrar counter, so fix a missing title before it becomes a moving-day crisis.
  • Complete the assignment at sale time. Handprinted name, signature, sales price in the back-of-title declaration, damage disclosure for every vehicle, odometer disclosure for 2011-and-newer models.
  • File the Notice of Sale before you leave town. Within 10 days, mail the notice from your title or submit it through the DVS title transfer page, so a buyer who dawdles on the transfer can't leave the car legally attached to you in another state.
