Sell your car in Duluth: driven daily, rusted or not started in months
Whether your car still climbs the hill every day or hasn't started since spring, ask for an instant cash offer; we pick it up free from any Duluth address. If it's the second kind, read the city's rules below first: Duluth doesn't let a dead car sit outside for long.

The county counter on Miller Trunk Highway
- Where it is. Minnesota DVS (still the Minnesota DMV to many people) takes title transfers at any deputy registrar office. In Duluth, the St. Louis County Auditor's Mall Service Center titles and registers vehicles at 1600 Miller Trunk Highway, Suite E03. Hours are 9 to 5:30 Monday through Friday and 9 to 1 on Saturday (St. Louis County).
- Go together if you can. The county's FAQ says it is best for buyer and seller to both be present for a title transfer. You can also report a car as junked there, or a sale the buyer never transferred.
- Using the drop box. The drop box outside takes title transactions with a written check to the St. Louis County Auditor; call 218-279-2520 first for fees, signatures and forms.
Where we pick up around Duluth
Our pickup area is all of Duluth and the towns around it, from Hermantown and Proctor above the city to Cloquet in the southwest and Two Harbors up the shore. Superior, across the bay in Wisconsin, is in it too. Distance from downtown doesn't add a fee.
The route to Superior changes in 2027. MnDOT plans a full closure of the Blatnik Bridge (I-535), tentatively from March 2027, while the old bridge is torn down and replaced. Traffic will detour over the Bong Bridge, about five miles southwest, and the two transportation departments set a goal of opening the new bridge by October 31, 2031 (MnDOT, Sept. 2026). Superior stays in pickup range the whole time.
Cash for your car in Duluth
Chapter 30 of Duluth's legislative code covers abandoned and inoperative vehicles. A car that doesn't run, or has no current plates or tabs, can't stay outside on any lot in the city, your own driveway included, for 14 days in a row unless it's inside a building. If the city posts a notice on it, you get 14 days to move it or store it indoors or behind a solid screen. After that, leaving it is a misdemeanor, and the city may remove and dispose of it under state law (Duluth Legislative Code, ch. 30).
Selling a junk car in Duluth doesn't require fixing it first: the offer is for the car in its current state, serious frame rust or a transmission that quit on the hill included. Describe it accurately and that offer holds at pickup, and we collect it from wherever it's parked. If the city's notice is already on the car, selling the junk car gets it off your lot without finding indoor space for it.
The transmission that quit on the hill has its own guide, selling a car with a slipping or dead transmission, with three things to check before you call it dead; for an engine that gave out, selling a car with a blown engine or head gasket works through whether a repair pays.
Duluth's parking calendar and snow emergencies
- •Alternate-side parking is in force 24/7, all year, unless signs on the block say otherwise. A dead car can't switch sides with everyone else (City of Duluth)
- •You park on the odd- or even-numbered side as the city's calendar lists for that week. Both sides are allowed only during the Sunday changeover, 4 to 8 p.m. (alternate side calendar)
- •The city calls a snow emergency by 4 p.m., and it takes effect at 8 p.m. Stay put while plows clear the other side, then move to the plowed side between 4 and 8 p.m. (City snow emergency page)
Asked by Duluth sellers
Do you buy cars across the bridge in Superior, Wisconsin?
Yes, Superior is in our pickup range. A car titled in Wisconsin is sold under Wisconsin's rules. One example: the Wisconsin DMV tells car sellers to remove the license plates. Mention which state issued the title when you call; moved to Duluth with a Wisconsin title? See selling a car with an out-of-state title.
How does a car trade-in value in Duluth compare with a cash offer?
A trade-in value is a credit a dealer applies toward a car you buy from that dealer. A cash offer is a price for your car on its own. Buying from a dealer in St. Louis County also brings the county's $20 vehicle excise tax, in place since April 1, 2015. Compare both numbers; trade-in vs. selling privately covers the rest.
Is there a watched spot in Duluth to meet a private buyer?
In November 2024 the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office and the Duluth Police Department marked a safe exchange area in the front parking lot of the joint Public Safety Building, 2030 N Arlington Ave. It is under video surveillance 24/7. Selling to us skips the meetup, since pickup happens at your place.
How long can a broken-down car stay on a Duluth street?
No more than 24 hours from the breakdown, under the city code, and no car may stay parked on a city street more than 24 hours in a row. Off the street, a driveway is the place for it while it waits: Duluth bans parking on the boulevard (the grass between sidewalk and street) and in front yards.
Can I keep a project car in my Duluth driveway instead of selling it?
One, with conditions. Each residential lot may keep one car under restoration if it's under a tarp or behind an opaque screen and substantial, verifiable progress starts within 180 days of parking it and continues. A second project car, or one nobody works on, falls under the rule above.
How to sign the title is a statewide Minnesota rule, not a Duluth one, so it lives on our Minnesota selling guide.
