Replacing a lost car title in Minnesota

Minnesota’s $7.25 duplicate fee is one of the lowest published anywhere — and the figure you actually pay depends entirely on how you file.

What Minnesota charges

The replacement title fee is $7.25. $7.25 duplicate title fee; by mail the total is $21.50 ($7.25 + $2.25 tech fee + $12 filing fee) using form PS2067A. Deputy registrar offices can print same-day. DVS waives the fee if a newly issued title was never received within six months of issuance.

The part that catches people out

At a deputy registrar office the fee is $7.25 and they can print it same-day. By post on Form PS2067A the total is $21.50, because the $7.25 is joined by a $2.25 technology fee and a $12 filing fee. That is nearly three times the headline number for the privilege of not driving to an office, and the office also hands you the title on the spot.

One provision here is worth knowing because almost no state offers it: if a newly issued title was never received, DVS waives the duplicate fee entirely within six months of issuance. If your title never turned up after a purchase or a lien release, say so — you may owe nothing at all.
