If the car sits off an alley
- Know who clears the alley. The City of South Bend does not plow alleys. Keeping them clear, all year, is up to the owners of the properties next to them.
- Clear a path to it. A way in to the garage or pad helps. You don't have to dig the car out to bare pavement.
- Stay reachable. Keep your phone on when the driver is close. The plate comes off before the car goes up on the truck, and we'll remind you.
Where we pick up around South Bend
We buy cars in South Bend and pick them up across Michiana: every part of the city, Mishawaka next door, Granger and Osceola to the northeast, and the edge of the Notre Dame campus. Beyond that, pickup runs east to Elkhart, west to New Carlisle, and south to Lakeville and down US-31 to Plymouth.
Notre Dame students: if you are replacing the car, take the campus parking permit off before pickup. Parking Services says the student permit's repositionable seal can move only to another vehicle registered on your ParkND account, and a lost permit costs the full $300 to replace. A title from your home state is fine: out-of-state paperwork is something we can work with.
Cash for your car in South Bend
South Bend marks abandoned cars with a yellow or a red tag, after a Neighborhood Services & Enforcement inspector confirms the car qualifies. A car at least three model years old that has sat dead on private property, where it can be seen from public property, for more than 20 days in a row gets the yellow one. The owner then has 20 days to prove it runs or remove it. After that the city can red-tag it, and three days later the city is authorized to tow it, under its abandoned vehicle rules.
We buy junk cars in South Bend, along with old, rusted, damaged and non-running ones, tagged or not. They get collected where they sit, whether that's a driveway off Portage Avenue or behind a garage in Mishawaka, and paid for on the spot. The offer accounts for what it takes to move the car, so say where it sits, whether it rolls and whether it has a tag. If what's left is mostly parts, begin with a junk car offer.
Rust is only one reason a car stops being worth fixing. For an engine that overheats or knocks, see selling a car with engine problems; for a transmission that slips or won't go into reverse, selling a car with a bad transmission; and after a crash, selling an accident-damaged car.
How much snow South Bend gets, and when
- •Normal snowfall at NOAA’s South Bend airport station is 64.5 inches a year (source)
- •51.4 inches of it falls in December, January and February (source)
- •At least an inch of snow is on the ground about 52 days a year, 44 of them from December through February. That is when a parked car is most likely to be sitting in snow (source)
Asked by South Bend sellers
Is there still cash for junk cars in South Bend once the city red-tags one on the street?
Yes, but the clock is short. On public property, South Bend counts a car as abandoned if it won't run, hasn't moved in three days, or has no valid license plate. It gets a red tag, and if nothing changes within 72 hours the city is authorized to tow it. Non-runners are collected where they sit, curb included.
I rent. Can my landlord get my dead car removed faster than 20 days?
Yes. If the property owner or their agent signs the city's abandoned vehicle removal waiver, the yellow-tag stage can be skipped and the city can put a red tag on the car instead. Questions about a tag go through the city's 311 line: dial 311 inside city limits or 574-233-0311 from outside, weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
My title is missing. Which BMV license branch near South Bend should I use?
Two Indiana BMV license branches are close by, and both have a BMV kiosk. As of September 2026, the South Bend branch at 1139 East Ireland Road is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. On a Wednesday or a Saturday morning, use the Mishawaka branch at 2544 Miracle Lane: it is open Tuesday through Saturday, until 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays, and closed Mondays. Between the two, at least one is open every day but Sunday.
It just snowed and my street isn't plowed. Can the car still be picked up?
Yes, winter pickups still happen. If the car is snowed in or won't start in the cold, say so when you accept, and the truck comes prepared. The city's Streets Department aims to have every street clear and drivable 36 hours after the snow stops, main routes first, and that count starts over with each new snowfall. If your block still isn't plowed after 36 hours, report it to 311 during business hours.
