Pickup parked at a shotgun-style home in Evansville Indiana with river-valley humidity hanging in the air and a big sycamore - selling a car in Evansville
Kentucky cars

If the car you buy next comes from Kentucky

  1. Get the form before the officer comes. EPD officers don't carry it. State Form 39530 is at any Indiana BMV license branch, and Evansville has three: East at 808 S. Green River Rd., North at 4209 Highway 41 N. and West at 2421 Allens Ln. It can also be printed from forms.in.gov.
  2. Call 911 and ask for a VIN check. EPD says the BMV requires this inspection for a vehicle bought outside Indiana, and its officers do them seven days a week.
  3. Have a check ready. The city charges $5 per inspection, made out to the City of Evansville and handed to the officer. Cash isn't accepted.
Local pickup

Where we pick up around Evansville

We come to you anywhere in Evansville, east to Newburgh (47630) and Boonville, north through Darmstadt and Haubstadt to Princeton, downriver to Mount Vernon (47620), and across the river to Henderson. The outlying towns run on the same clock as the city: pickup is typically within a few days of an accepted offer, scheduled around you, and distance adds no surcharge or delay. Mention shift times, gate codes or a car that doesn't run, so the right truck shows up the first time.

Evansville tip: show the car from your driveway, not the street. City code 10.15.090 bars parking a vehicle on any roadway mainly to display it for sale, and bars washing, greasing or repairing it there unless the repair is an emergency.

Henderson buyers

Selling to someone who will plate it in Henderson

Kentucky law requires a car bought in another state to be inspected by the sheriff in the county where it will be licensed. For a Henderson County buyer, that stop is the Sheriff's Office at 20 N. Main Street, Suite 112. As of September 2026, the county's inspection page lists weekday hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and a $15 fee, cash or check only.

The inspector compares the VIN on the car with the one on your title and records the mileage. The car also has to be safe to drive: brakes, brake lights, headlights, rear lights, steering and turn signals must work, the front wipers must run, and all the window glass has to be in place. So a buyer who wants a Henderson County plate for a car with a dead headlight or a missing window will have to fix it first. Check the lights and wipers yourself before a Henderson buyer comes to look.

Flat tires count

Cash for your car in Evansville

In Evansville, a car with flat tires or a broken window can count as abandoned, even in your own driveway. The abandoned-vehicle page of the Evansville Police Department (EPD) lists a mechanically inoperable car as one kind of abandoned vehicle: one that can't be started and legally driven, with flat tires, no battery, no drive train and broken windows as its examples. Once EPD notifies you that a car is in violation, you have 72 hours to remove it or make it drivable. Moving it onto private property without fixing the problem still leaves you in violation. Questions go to EPD's Crime Prevention Office at (812) 435-6135.

Looking for cash for junk cars in Evansville? A junk car goes through the same online form as any other. Say what's wrong with it and where it's parked, and when you sell the junk car, we come to where it sits.

If it's more than flat tires or a dead battery, say a blown head gasket or a transmission that slips, selling a car with engine problems and selling a car with a bad transmission show how to pin down what failed before you sell. For a car an insurer totaled, selling a totaled car explains keeping it on a salvage title instead of letting the insurer take it.

Evansville questions

Asked by Evansville sellers

I'm in Henderson or Owensboro. Do you buy across the river?

Yes. Sell My Car Hub works nationwide, so a Kentucky seller gets a Kentucky offer under Kentucky's paperwork rules, with the same phone number and the same process. This page covers the Indiana side, but the river isn't a boundary for the offer or the pickup.

A private buyer in Evansville wants to pay cash. What should I watch for?

Fake bills. EPD's fraud page says the counterfeit bills most commonly found locally are twenties and hundreds. It also reports an increase in movie prop bills, usually printed "Motion Picture Use Only" where real money has its text, and fake bills marked with Asian symbols. Both can look real at first glance. The Secret Service's Know Your Money page shows what to check before you sign anything.

EPD towed my car. How do I get it back before I sell it?

For a car EPD towed to its regular lot, only the registered owner, with photo ID, can get it back. EPD's towed-vehicles page names the lot and suggests calling it before you go, to make sure it's open, that you have the right paperwork, and to set a time. A car towed for the abandoned-vehicle violation goes to a different place, and the same page gives that number too.

Can EPD inspect a salvage car?

No. EPD's inspection page says salvage vehicle inspections are done by the Indiana State Police, not the city. The State Police's Evansville post is District 35, at 19411 Highway 41 North, (812) 867-2079. Before you sell one, read selling a salvage or rebuilt title car.

If the title is from Indiana, your half of the paperwork is an Indiana title transfer, even when the buyer lives in Kentucky.
