Junk cars in Fort Wayne: what a city tag starts
- Read the tag. Neighborhood Code Compliance tags a vehicle that breaks the rules and puts the instructions and the time frame for fixing it on the tag.
- Count 20 days. Under the state-law definition the city cites, a vehicle is abandoned when it is three or more model years old, mechanically inoperable and left on private property for more than 20 days. If the owner makes no appointment within 20 days to show it runs, it can be towed and the owner can get a $100 ticket.
- Or sell it. A sale takes the car off the property instead, and the paperwork gets checked at pickup so nothing bounces at the BMV later.
Where we pick up around Fort Wayne
Pickup covers all of Fort Wayne, from downtown (46802) to Waynedale (46809) on the south side and up the north side toward Huntertown. Past the city line it reaches New Haven (46774) to the east and Roanoke to the southwest, then keeps going along US-30 and I-69 to towns such as Columbia City and Auburn.
Selling a pickup: GM's Fort Wayne Assembly plant in Roanoke, open since 1986, builds the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500. Whatever badge yours wears, give the exact build in the form: cab style, bed length, engine, and two- or four-wheel drive. Trucks past 200,000 miles still get an offer; our truck page covers high-mileage and work trucks in more detail.
Cash for your car in Fort Wayne
Fort Wayne doesn't let a dead car wait in the yard indefinitely. City ordinance 90.02 makes it illegal to abandon a vehicle on public or private property, and partially dismantled, non-operating, wrecked or junked vehicles also may not be left within the city. Complaints about a car on private property go to Neighborhood Code Compliance through 311, and the steps further down show what that office's tag sets in motion.
Cash for cars in Fort Wayne isn't only for ones that still pass as daily drivers: the offer form takes old, damaged and non-running trucks, SUVs and sedans. You don't pay to tow yours anywhere. Tell us what it is, what it did last and where it sits, and pickup comes to it.
Registration counts too. City code requires every vehicle parked on private property within public view to have valid license plates and current registration stickers. One without them gets a notice, and tickets or even a tow can follow if nothing changes. That covers a car whose sticker ran out while it sat. If it isn't worth fixing, you can get cash for junk cars in Fort Wayne through our junk car offer, and once it's sold, the car leaves your driveway and the expired sticker goes with it.
For a wrecked truck or car, selling an accident-damaged car explains why a buyer checks the frame before the dents. One that quit with a blown head gasket or a slipping transmission is covered in selling a car with engine problems and selling a car with a bad transmission.

Asked by Fort Wayne sellers
Which Fort Wayne BMV license branch is open on Saturday?
Waynedale, at 6011 Bluffton Rd. on the south side, is open 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday. It is also open 9 to 6:30 on Tuesday and 9 to 5 Wednesday through Friday, and closed Monday. Fort Wayne's other branch, Pine Valley at 10204 Coldwater Rd. on the north side, is open 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and closed Wednesday and Saturday. The New Haven branch, at 820 Lincoln Highway West, keeps Waynedale's hours. All three have a kiosk. The BMV's branch map showed these hours in September 2026.
Can the truck sit on the lawn with a for-sale sign while it sells?
Not in a residential district. Municipal code 72.23 requires cars, trucks, trailers, campers, boats and RVs there to park on an approved surface: gravel, asphalt or concrete, pervious pavers, or another approved all-weather hard surface free of overgrown vegetation. Tickets can run $100 per day, per violation, and a car on the grass can be reported through 311.
My car died on the street, not in the driveway. Who handles that?
Parking Enforcement. The city sends concerns about vehicles on public streets there, while Neighborhood Code Compliance handles vehicles on private property. Both are reached by calling 311, or 260-427-8311 from outside Allen County.
I live outside city limits in Allen County. Who handles junk cars there?
The county Building Department. Title 6, Article 9 of the Allen County Code makes it unlawful to leave a partially dismantled, non-operating, wrecked or junked vehicle on public or private premises in unincorporated Allen County, and names that department as the agency that removes, stores and disposes of abandoned vehicles. An owner can arrange the removal and disposal instead by signing an abandoned vehicle removal waiver with the department.
Fort Wayne's code stops at the city line; how you sign the title over is the same anywhere in Indiana, and it's on our Indiana page.
