- Not on the lawn. Section 28-65 bars parking any vehicle, running or not, on a front or rear lawn unless there is an approved driveway or parking pad.
- Not on the parkway. The city calls the strip between the sidewalk and the curb the parkway. Section 36-13 bans parking or driving on it, and bans putting anything out for sale on a sidewalk or parkway.
- No sign by the curb. Section 36-5 bans any sign, even a temporary one, between the property line and the curb on a public street, other than traffic signs. The Board of Public Works and Safety has them removed.

Which cars in Gary don't need the emissions test at all?
The four newest model years are exempt. So are cars that run on diesel, propane, natural gas or electricity, though gas hybrids still test. A car at least 25 years old can get an antique exemption if it has collectible or classic car insurance, or if a test station confirms its required pollution equipment is in place. To renew that exemption, it has to stay within 3,000 miles a year.
What if I can't afford the repairs to pass?
Clean Air Car Check runs a Repair Assistance Program for households at or below 150% of the federal poverty level, for one vehicle per household in each two-year test cycle. You apply with the inspection report from the failed test, your household size and income, and any repair receipts or estimates. A car that fails may also qualify for a 30-day temporary permit, bought at the station at the time of the test. The registered owner must be there to buy it, and the BMV allows only two in 12 months.
Where near Gary can a buyer title the car on a Saturday?
