How the city handles a dead car on private property
- Ten days of watching. Under the city's code-violation process, inspectors first monitor the car for 10 days.
- A letter with a 10-day clock. Next comes a Notice of Violation: show that the car runs, or remove it, within 10 days. A sale with pickup inside that window takes the car off the property.
- Environmental Court. If it's still in violation, the owner is cited to the next Environmental Court hearing, usually two to three weeks out. Section 21-152 sets a fine of up to $50, each day counting as a separate offense, and the city can seek a court order to remove the car at the owner's expense.
Where we pick up around Chattanooga
We buy cars all over Chattanooga, from downtown (37402) out to East Ridge (37412), Red Bank and Hixson (37343), and on to Soddy-Daisy, Ooltewah and Collegedale. Houses up on Signal Mountain are covered, and so is Cleveland, out I-75. Pickup is free across that whole area.
Booted by the Parking Authority? Call the Chattanooga Parking Authority at 423-668-0135 and pay the outstanding fees plus a $75 boot fee by card; a six-digit release code comes by email. Fees still unpaid 48 hours later mean the car can be towed, and the towing and storage costs are yours too.
If the car waits on someone else's lot
Under the city's abandoned-vehicle rules, a car left on private property without the owner's consent for more than 48 hours counts as abandoned, and so does one left illegally on public property that long.
A car left more than 30 days in a row in a garage or parking lot gets reported: Section 24-28 has the lot's owner send its make and VIN to the chief of police. We pick it up where it is, so it doesn't have to move first.
Cash for your car in Chattanooga
The city's property code sets a low bar for "inoperable." Under its definitions, a car counts if it can't move under its own power, lacks a wheel or a fully inflated tire, has a broken window, or can't legally be driven on public streets. Section 21-152 bars keeping an inoperable vehicle on any private premises in the city, and Section 21-153 adds that a repair job outside a closed garage in a residential area can't leave a car inoperable for more than 24 hours.
Cash for cars in Chattanooga covers those cars too: old, wrecked, not running, or down to bare brake pads. We buy it as it is, the offer reflects the work it needs, and pickup is free from where it sits. The junk car sale page has the details.
Code staff work from complaints filed through 311 at (423) 643-6311. Rolling a junk car to the curb doesn't help: Section 24-343 bars leaving a nonoperating or junked vehicle on any street or alley.
When the work your car needs is an engine or transmission job, the guides to selling a car with an overheated or seized engine and selling a car with a transmission that slips or has no reverse show what those repairs typically cost. After a wreck, read selling a car with accident damage for what a buyer looks at, and selling a car your insurer totaled for whether to take the payout or keep the car.
