Out of a Springfield police impound, in three steps
- Phone first. Ask Springfield Police, at 417-864-1810, whether the car has an investigative hold and whether your papers will get a release.
- Headquarters for the release. Release forms come only from Police Headquarters, 321 E. Chestnut Expressway, in lobby hours, weekdays 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Bring government photo ID and proof you own the car; the title, a notarized bill of sale or a notarized power of attorney all count.
- Brookline for the car. Every Springfield police custody tow goes to one yard, 2806 S. Farm Road 115 in Brookline, and the tow fee is paid there, not to the police. A car towed for missing or expired plates or tabs has to leave the yard safely and legally, and that part is on you.
Where we pick up around Springfield
Pickup covers Springfield and the cities that plan transportation with it through the Ozarks Transportation Organization: Nixa, the largest of them in the 2020 census, plus Ozark, Republic, Battlefield, Willard and Strafford, across Greene and Christian counties. It also runs east to Rogersville and up Highway 13 to Bolivar. Parked down a gravel drive or a long rural approach? Mention it when you book.
Springfield tip: got a notice about a car in the yard? The city's Land Use and Nuisance page links a property lookup where you can check for a code violation by filtering your search to Code Enforcement.
Cash for your car in Springfield
Springfield's code counts more cars as "inoperable" than you might expect. Under Section 106-35, a car is inoperable if it can't travel under its own power or "does not display a valid license," even if it never leaves your driveway. A wrecked, junked or non-running car may sit on a property in Springfield for seven days at most, unless it's kept in an enclosed building that meets city permit, zoning and building rules.
If that clock is running, cash for cars in Springfield, MO is one way out: an old car, a wreck or one whose engine is gone gets an instant offer, and asking is free. Say whether it starts, and the truck is sent to wherever it's parked. If parts and metal are all it's worth, our junk car page is the better place to begin.
If the engine seized, blew a head gasket or overheated, selling a car with a dead or seized engine explains when a repair still makes sense, and selling a car with a bad transmission does the same for slipping, limp mode or no reverse. If a wreck stopped it and the insurer declared it a total loss, selling a totaled car covers the payout, buying it back and the salvage title.
The clock on a car that doesn't move
- •1 hour: the longest a wrecked, junked or non-running car may be left on a city street, and only in an emergency (Sec. 106-35)
- •48 hours: past that, any vehicle left unattended on a city street counts as abandoned, even one that runs, and an inoperable one left unmoved on a street, sidewalk or right-of-way can be towed on police order (Sec. 106-34, Sec. 106-35)
- •$25 to $300: the minimum fines for nuisance violations, a list that includes inoperable vehicles: $25 for a first offense within 12 months, then $50, $150 and $300 for four or more (City of Springfield)
- •10 days: after a municipal court conviction, the court orders the car moved to a lawful place within ten days, and one that stays can be impounded (Sec. 106-35)
Asked by Springfield sellers
I need to sell my car in Springfield, MO. Where are the license offices, and is one open on Saturday?
Missouri DMV counters are called license offices, and Springfield has three: downtown at 149 Park Central Square (weekdays 8 to 4), 525A S. Glenstone (8:30 to 4:30), and South Springfield at 3433D S. Campbell Ave. (8:30 to 5), open since October 2025. None opens on Saturday; the Nixa, Ozark and Republic offices do, 8 a.m. to noon, per the state's office list.
Will a Springfield license office take my online Greene County tax receipt?
Not the confirmation you get when you pay online. The Greene County Collector says that web confirmation is not valid at the license office, and the official receipt is ready after 10 a.m. the next business day. If you're registering the car that replaces the one you sold, pay a day ahead, or pay in person for an immediate receipt. The Collector's office is open weekdays 8 to 4:30, through the lunch hour.
I'm selling my only car and may go a while without one. What will Greene County want when I register the next?
The license office wants either a paid tax receipt or a tax waiver, which the Collector's Office calls a Statement of Non-assessment. Owning no personal property on January 1 of the prior year is one of the reasons the Assessor lists for a waiver. To ask for one, you need an account on file with the Assessor's Office; then email the Collector's office answers to its questions, including where you lived each January 1 for five years if you've been in Greene County for less time than that.
Is there a watched spot around Springfield for meeting a private buyer?
Two. Missouri State's Safe Exchange Zone, on the north side of the building at 636 E. Elm St., serves the campus community: it's near the Springfield Police substation, monitored at all times, with a surveillance camera and an emergency phone, and the university asks you to ring 417-836-5509 first. Off campus and open to anyone, Nixa Police keep an exchange zone in the parking area in front of the department, 715 W. Center Circle, usable any time, with 24-hour lighting and a camera that records but isn't watched live.
My dead car is in a Missouri State parking lot. How long before it gets towed?
Under Missouri State's towing rules, once staff have tried to reach the owner, the university can remove a car that looks abandoned or is still there 48 hours after a notice asking for it to be moved. A registered car with five or more citations in one academic year (August to July) gets a wheel lock.
Missouri's title, plate and sale-notice rules are the same in Greene County as anywhere else in the state; our Missouri page has them.
