Columbia's clock on a nuisance vehicle
- The notice gives at least 30 days. Under Section 11-267, the abatement notice is posted on the car or somewhere visible on the property, and its deadline must be at least 30 days out.
- Contest it within 7 days, in writing. A hearing request has to reach the director within seven days of the notice, by hand, mail, fax or email. Neighborhood Services, which enforces vehicle rules on private property, is at 573-817-5050.
- Miss the deadline and the city can remove it. The cost falls on the car's owner and the occupant, and it can also become a special tax bill on the property, at 8% interest if unpaid. A sale ends it sooner: pickup usually comes within a few days of the offer.
Where we pick up around Columbia
Free pickup covers Columbia's 65201, 65202 and 65203 ZIP codes and the towns on Boone County's own community list, including Ashland, Hallsville, Centralia and Rocheport. Past the county line, pickups run down US 63 to Jefferson City and out to Fulton, Boonville and Moberly.
Columbia tip: check the windshield before pickup day. A green Public Works sticker means four or more unpaid parking tickets are past their court dates. Pay within 72 hours or a yellow barnacle can go on, and a barnacled car is illegal to drive. Pay online or at 600 E. Broadway, then call 573-874-2489 and ask for Parking to have a barnacle removed (City of Columbia, July 2025).
Cash for your car in Columbia
Columbia's code spells out when a parked car becomes a problem. Under Section 11-262, a vehicle is "inoperable" if it has no engine, has one or more flat or missing tires, or can't run for lack of a major part. On private property, an inoperable, dismantled or unlicensed car is declared a nuisance by Section 11-263 unless it is kept in a garage or similar fully enclosed structure, or behind a locked fence where it can't clearly be seen. A carport counts only for an unlicensed car that still runs.
We pay cash for cars in Columbia, MO that are in that shape. Say it won't start when you schedule: the truck brings a winch for a car that can't move under its own power. If all that's left is metal and parts, start with our junk car offer.
If a blown engine or a slipping transmission is what keeps your car parked, selling a car with a blown engine or head gasket and selling a car whose transmission slips or has no reverse help you weigh the repair against selling it as it is. A car that's been in a wreck has its own guide: selling an accident-damaged car.

- •On Sept. 18, 2026, MoDOT said every ramp at the Providence Road interchange was closed and would stay closed until the new bridge over I-70 is done, expected at the end of October 2026 (MoDOT)
Asked by Columbia sellers
I sold my car in Columbia. Why did Boone County still send a tax bill for it?
Because Boone County taxes the vehicles you owned on January 1, and the Collector's office doesn't prorate the bill. So that year's tax is still yours: bills go out in November and must be paid or postmarked by December 31, and you can pay in person in room 118 of the Boone County Government Center at Ninth and Ash. To keep the car off next year's bill, delete it on your personal property declaration, which is due to the Assessor by March 1.
Can I sell my car in Columbia, MO while it's parked at Mizzou?
Campus lots are inside the pickup area. Before the car goes, clear any campus citations: unpaid ones can cost students course registration, transcripts or diplomas. Mizzou also lets a student register one vehicle at a time, and a permit can't be passed to anyone else, including the car's next owner.
My car died on I-70 in Columbia. How long before it's towed?
Columbia's traffic code lets police order a tow for a vehicle left unattended on the right-of-way of an interstate, freeway or state highway for more than 10 hours (Section 14-549). The owner pays the towing and storage charges. If the repair isn't worth it, a car that won't run can still get an offer once it's off the highway.
Is it legal to leave my car on a Columbia street with a For Sale sign?
Not as a way to sell it. Section 14-283 bans parking on any roadway mainly to display a vehicle for sale. Any vehicle also has to move within 24 hours on a street, alley or public place, and an unlicensed, wrecked or non-running car can't be left on a street at all (Article IX).
