A trip to the Kootenai County vehicle office
- Pick the office. Kootenai County's assessor runs the local Idaho DMV: two motor vehicle offices, at 451 Government Way in Coeur d'Alene (208-446-1580) and 200 E Railroad Avenue in Post Falls (208-446-1590). Both have a drop box (Kootenai County DMV).
- Watch for the late start. On the last Tuesday of each month the Coeur d'Alene office opens at 9:15 a.m., and on the last Wednesday so does Post Falls.
- Start title work before 3:45 p.m. The offices close at 4, and the county says title work takes time (county FAQ). Driver's licenses are a separate office run by the Sheriff, so an appointment made there won't cover your title (appointments).

If your Washington title has gone missing, the replacement has to come from Washington. Kootenai County's DMV FAQ says a lost title means applying for a duplicate "from the state of issuance" (Kootenai County DMV FAQ). Washington's Department of Licensing says a standard replacement can take 4 to 8 weeks (Washington DOL), so if you plan to sell, start on it before anything else.

Do I still file Washington's Report of Sale if I sell the car in Idaho?
Yes, if the car is registered in Washington. The state's Department of Licensing gives sellers 5 days to file one, and its list of sales that need a report includes selling out of state. The report is what protects you from towing charges and liabilities the new owner runs up, and you can file it online.
When is the Kootenai County vehicle office least busy?
Mid-month is the better bet. The county says both of its vehicle offices get very busy around the beginning and end of each month. The walk-in line opens at 7:15 a.m. on weekdays and runs until it's full, first come, first served, and you can join it online before you go.
Will Kootenai County's transfer station take a whole junk car?
Not in one piece. Kootenai County Solid Waste lists car body parts among the metal it accepts, marked "parts only," and takes no metal item longer than 10 feet or wider than 4 feet. Its transfer stations are on Ramsey Road in Coeur d'Alene and Prairie Avenue in Post Falls. A whole car can come to us instead, with one offer and pickup from your driveway.
I live in Kellogg. Which county office handles title work there?
Shoshone County's. Kellogg is one of that county's cities, and the county Motor Vehicle Department is at 700 Bank Street, Suite 45, in Wallace. It serves walk-ins from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, but processes title transfers only until 4:30 p.m.
