The county office side of a Cape Coral-Fort Myers sale
- Get a printed title. In Lee County, Florida DMV title and plate work is done by the Lee County Tax Collector. If FLHSMV holds your title electronically and you need it on paper, book a "Print or Replace Title" appointment and bring the duplicate title application and ID for every owner on the title.
- Check the wait first. The Cape Coral center is at 1039 SE 9th Ave, across from the main post office; the others are downtown Fort Myers, Lehigh Acres, South Fort Myers and Bonita Springs. The tax collector posts each center's current wait and takes walk-ins as well as appointments.
- Drop the plate in a box if it won't go on another car. Each center has one outside, with envelopes. Plates dropped by 4 p.m. on a business day are processed that day; the receipt comes by mail.
Where we pick up around Cape Coral-Fort Myers
The truck comes to you on both sides of the Caloosahatchee: Cape Coral (33990), Fort Myers (33901) and Lehigh Acres (33974), and south through Estero to Bonita Springs. It crosses to Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel, and runs north through North Fort Myers to Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte.
North Fort Myers has no tax collector service center right now. The Lee County Tax Collector closed it on July 31, 2026. Until the new Colonial Service Center opens, planned for late 2026, use one of the other five.
How deep the surge got, town by town
The National Hurricane Center's report on Ian, last updated in March 2026, puts peak surge at 10 to 15 feet above ground on Fort Myers Beach, 8 to 12 feet in Estero and Bonita Springs, and 6 to 9 feet in Cape Coral and Pine Island. Up the Caloosahatchee, the surge reversed the river's flow and flooded the streets of Fort Myers.
A car that sat in that water can still be sold: salvage and rebuilt titles get offers, and so do cars that haven't started since. If Florida holds your title electronically, the first step below gets you a printed one to read. Our guide to selling a flood-damaged car covers what a water history changes.
Cash for your car in Cape Coral-Fort Myers
Junk cars in Cape Coral are junk in the code's sense too: section 9-14 counts "non-serviceable or discarded motor vehicles" as junk, and section 9-16 bans keeping junk outside an enclosed building. It adds that a carport on a residential lot doesn't count as one.
In Fort Myers, section 54-246 treats a car with no current plate or registration as evidence it is junked, and a junked car must be kept inside a building. Once police post a notice on it, section 54-247 gives 10 days to move it or store it lawfully, and a conviction can bring a fine of up to $500. Cash for junk cars in Fort Myers doesn't depend on the car starting: a car that won't start still gets an offer, and the truck loads it by winch, so you don't need to jump it or tow it first. If the carport rule or a notice is behind the sale, start with our junk car page.
If the insurer totaled the car after Ian or a crash, selling a totaled car or buying it back weighs taking the payout against keeping it on a salvage title, and selling a car with accident or frame damage covers what a buyer checks and what you must disclose.
Take the toll tag off before the car goes
- •Lee County's toll plazas at the Midpoint, Cape Coral and Sanibel bridges are all-electronic. A two-axle car crossing Midpoint or Cape Coral with no transponder is billed by plate: $2.00 plus a $3 admin fee (LeeWay FAQ)
- •LeeWay says to call (239) 533-9297 to change the vehicle on your account and take the transponder off the old car. A sticker transponder can't be reused on the next one (LeeWay FAQ)
- •LeeWay can place a registration stop on a plate with unpaid Lee County tolls, which blocks renewing it until the tolls, fees and fines owed to the county are paid (LeeWay)
Asked by Cape Coral-Fort Myers sellers
Should I take a dealer's trade-in value in Fort Myers instead?
Part of a trade-in's value is tax. A dealer can deduct your trade-in from the taxable price of the car you buy. For a buyer with a Lee County address, the county's 0.5% surtax is charged on only the first $5,000 of the price. Set the tax saving next to the cash offer before you decide. Our guide to trading in versus selling compares the two.
Can I leave my car with a For Sale sign on a lot in Cape Coral?
Not on an empty lot. City code section 12-127.12 bans showing a vehicle for sale on unimproved land, and in the open on land zoned C, CC, P or I. Parking at a store while you shop is fine, but eight hours straight on the same lot is presumed a violation. A code officer can boot the car; the boot comes off for a $200 bond, and you have 10 calendar days to move it or appeal before it's towed at your cost.
Can I keep the car under a cover in my Cape Coral driveway until it sells?
Under a car cover that isn't torn or frayed, yes. Section 12-127.6 bans tarps, sheets, blankets and plastic on cars at homes in residential districts, and the car must sit on concrete, asphalt or pavers, not grass, shell or dirt. Fines under section 12-127.18 start at $150 and reach $1,000 for a fourth violation within 12 months. If the car no longer runs, the junk rule above may apply too.
Where should I meet someone from an online listing in Cape Coral?
Somewhere public. In March 2026, Cape Coral police reported an online marketplace sale of gold jewelry where the buyer, meeting the seller in his garage, grabbed the pieces and tried to run. Their advice: meet in a well-lit public place or a designated safe exchange zone, bring someone with you, and walk away if something feels wrong.
