What sets your CarMax trade-in value, and what lowers it

Your CarMax trade-in value is one written offer, the same whether you trade in or simply sell, and it stays valid for seven days. CarMax builds it from the car’s details, condition and history plus the market, and changes an online offer only when its in-person check finds a car that differs from your description.

How CarMax sets its offer

CarMax spells out its method in its selling FAQ, read on October 25, 2026: “We analyze your car’s specific year, make, model, mileage, and features. We consider its condition, history, and use from information you provide, our own assessments, and internal and third-party history information.” It adds that it weighs market conditions and sales performance, and that it may test-drive a car to check some mechanical conditions.

Three details on CarMax’s own pages show how the method works in practice:

The appraisal itself costs nothing. CarMax’s annual report for the year ended February 28, 2026 says it appraises cars in person free of charge and puts the offer in writing whether or not the owner buys a car from it.

Instant offer, store appraisal or Offer Watch: which number counts

CarMax has three ways to put a number on your car, and only two of them are offers.

So if you went looking for a CarMax trade-in estimator, Offer Watch is the estimate, and the instant offer is the number CarMax will actually pay once the car passes its check. On the CarMax pages we read, the tool is called an online offer or an instant offer, not an instant cash offer. Kelley Blue Book’s Instant Cash Offer has its own guide.

What lowers a CarMax offer

Each item below comes from CarMax’s own pages; none is a guess at its formula.

Underneath all of these is what kind of car it is. CarMax’s 10-K for fiscal 2026 says the typical car sold at its wholesale auctions “is more than 11 years old and has more than 100,000 miles,” and that those auctions are mostly cars from its appraisals that didn’t meet its retail standards. That year it sold 538,203 cars at auction for an average of $7,942, against 780,684 retail sales averaging $26,121.

Those are different cars, so the gap is not what your car loses. It does show where an older, high-mileage car is likely to end up after CarMax buys it: a dealer auction, where CarMax says prices usually reflect the general wholesale market. That is the market to compare its offer with, not retail listings. Our page on whether CarMax buys old cars goes further.

Trade in with CarMax or sell outright: same number, different tax bill

CarMax prices both the same. Its annual report says it split trading in from buying the next car into “two distinct and independent transactions,” and its Q&A page says the price is the same whether you sell outright or trade in. Its trade-in guide adds that CarMax “does not negotiate” on an appraisal.

Where a trade-in can still come out ahead is sales tax. CarMax’s guide explains that in many states you pay tax only on the difference between the car you buy and your trade-in offer, that some states cap the credit, and that “trading in with a dealership may save you some money on your newer car purchase.” The credit is tied to buying a car, so:

Which states give the credit, cap it or give none is set out in our guide to trading in or selling privately.

How long a CarMax offer lasts, and what happens when it expires

Seven days. CarMax’s FAQ puts it this way: “If you want to redeem your offer and sell your car to CarMax, you have 7 days from the day we make the offer.” You can take it to any CarMax store inside that week, not just the one that issued it.

An expired offer is not a refusal. CarMax says “if your offer expires, you can get an updated offer online anytime,” and a store will “re-appraise your car and give you an updated offer” once the seven days have passed. Expect the new figure to differ, since the mileage and the market it rests on will have moved.

Two habits make the week count. Request the offer when you are ready to decide, not weeks ahead. And if you want pickup, book it while the offer is live: CarMax says pickup is scheduled when you get the online offer, which is valid for 7 days.

How to check CarMax’s number against other offers

CarMax expects you to shop. “Many people get a CarMax offer first, then use their seven days to shop around and confirm it’s the best offer out there,” its trade-in guide says, and it names Kelley Blue Book and Edmunds, alongside its own appraisal, as ways to pin down a car’s value. Edmunds is owned by CarMax, its November 2025 release notes, so pair it with a source CarMax doesn’t own. A practical order:

  1. Look up a pricing guide’s trade-in and private-party values for your exact trim and miles, so you know the range. Our guide to what your car is worth explains why the two differ.
  2. Get at least one other written offer in the same week, from a dealer, another online buyer or Carvana.
  3. For an older, high-mileage car, compare offers with offers, not with retail asking prices.

If CarMax’s number looks thin for an older car, get a free second offer from our buying partner; you have a week to accept it. We’re not affiliated with CarMax. For a clean, recent car its number may well be the one to beat, and our guide to selling to CarMax walks through the rest of the sale.

Common questions

What people ask about this

Is the CarMax online offer real or just an estimate?

It is a real offer. CarMax’s help center says online and in-store offers alike are real and valid for 7 days. Offer Watch is the estimate, and it can’t be used to sell until you turn it back into an active offer.

My CarMax offer expired. What now?

Ask for a new one. CarMax says you can get an updated offer online at any time, or a store will re-appraise the car. The figure will reflect the car’s mileage and the market on the new date, so it can come back higher or lower.

Does CarMax give more for a trade-in than for a straight sale?

No. CarMax says the price is the same whether you sell outright or trade in. What can differ is tax: where your state credits trade-ins, using the offer toward a CarMax purchase can lower the sales tax on the car you buy.

Should I detail my car before a CarMax appraisal?

Not at great expense. CarMax’s seller’s guide says there’s no need to spend a lot on professional detailing, because it cares more about how the car has been looked after than about small blemishes. Its trade-in guide still suggests a wash, a tidy interior and a vacuum. Our guide to detailing before you sell covers what is worth doing.
