Your Carvana trade-in value is a single offer built from your plate or VIN, your answers on condition, mileage and features, and Carvana’s read of the market. You can take it as a check or bank transfer, or put it toward a Carvana car, where most states cut the sales tax; either way it lasts 7 days.

Carvana names its inputs in a help article on how it determines the value of your vehicle: features, accident history, mileage, service records, “reputable pricing guides,” Carvana market conditions and overall market analysis. Its sell page adds that the result reflects “current auto market conditions,” and its offer-change article says offers vary over time, so the same car can draw a different number from one month to the next.
The Value Tracker FAQ is more specific about Carvana’s own market. It says values come from the “Carvana Pricing Algorithm,” which also looks at recent demand for certain vehicles on Carvana’s website, and that location, condition, trim and added features count too. In other words, Carvana’s values reflect how cars like yours sell on Carvana itself, not only what a pricing guide prints.
Two practical points follow. The VIN fills in the car’s specific details, so report the trim and options the car really has. And accident history is a named input, so read your car’s history report before you ask for the number; our guide to a free vehicle history report shows where to get one.
Carvana doesn’t say how much any single input is worth, but its pages make clear which ones it checks and when.
| Input | What Carvana says | What to do before you ask |
|---|---|---|
| Accident history | One of the inputs it lists for every valuation | Check the history report first, so a reported accident doesn’t surprise you |
| Mileage | Listed as an input; Value Tracker adjusts for estimated miles since you signed up | Enter the actual odometer reading, not a rounded one |
| Keys and trim | Changing details such as the number of keys or the trim produces a new offer automatically | Count your keys and confirm the trim before you start |
| Condition | Tested by automated checks, photo reviews and a final look at the appointment | Report dents, warning lights and wear plainly |
| Extended warranty | “Not transferable” and “will not add to your vehicle’s value” | Leave it out of the number you expect |
| Market timing | Offers “vary over time” with market conditions | Decide within the 7 days if the number works |
The third column is the part you control. Carvana’s number is only as accurate as what you enter, and the appointment exists to catch the difference.
Yes. Carvana defines a trade-in as selling your vehicle while buying another in the same transaction, and the offer for your car is the same either way. What changes is the math around it.
So compare like with like. In a state that gives the credit, a Carvana trade-in offer a few hundred dollars below a cash offer elsewhere can still come out ahead once the tax saving is counted. Our guides to taxes when selling a car and the trade-in versus private sale math show how to run it with your own numbers.
Seven days. Carvana’s trade-in article says an offer saved to your account is valid for 7 days, and its offer-change article adds that to keep it from expiring you have to accept it and follow the steps provided. An offer you never accept stays in your account: Carvana says there’s no way to delete it, that this doesn’t mean you’ve agreed to sell, and that after a while it shows as expired.
Once it lapses, a new appraisal produces a new number rather than reviving the old one. Whether resubmitting helps, and what else can change the offer, is on our page about negotiating with Carvana.
If you’re not ready to sell, Carvana Value Tracker watches the number for you. Carvana calls it 100% free, with no purchase or sale necessary, and its help center says it sends one monthly email with the estimated value of each car you add, worked out from your details, a Carvana evaluation and an estimate of how your mileage has grown.
Two things to know before you lean on that figure. Carvana says the figure represents “Carvana’s value, not the average market value”, though it calls it a competitive assessment when you’re deciding whether to sell or trade. And it isn’t the offer: to sell, you open the car on the tracker page, tap Sell My Car, update or confirm the details, and only then receive a real offer, valid for 7 days. Keep the mileage current in the tracker, since the monthly figure assumes how far you’ve driven.
The tracker’s FAQ also notes that values move with the seasons, with demand peaking “mainly in the spring or fall” and lowest in the winter months. If your timing is flexible, our guide to the best time to sell a car covers timing in more depth.
A Carvana offer is one buyer’s price for your car this week. Three checks tell you whether it’s a good one.
If Carvana can’t produce a number at all, its offer-status article says a “You stumped us” screen means it needs more information to appraise the car, and gives a number to text. A car outside its rules, such as one from 1992 or earlier or one Carvana can’t safely drive, is covered in what Carvana won’t buy, and the documents, appointment and payment steps are in our guide to selling your car to Carvana. Carvana and Sell My Car Hub are not affiliated.
Yes. Trading in at Carvana means selling your car to it in the same transaction as buying one of its cars. One vehicle can be traded per purchase, its value must be below the price of the car you’re buying, and in most states the trade lowers the sales tax on the purchase.
No, it’s one offer. After the appraisal you choose a check, a direct deposit, or applying the value to a Carvana car. Trading in can add a sales tax saving, which Carvana says doesn’t apply in California, the District of Columbia, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon or Virginia.
No. Carvana says extended warranties aren’t transferable and won’t add to the car’s value. After the sale you may be able to cancel one for a prorated refund; ask the warranty provider.
Carvana lists service records among the inputs to its offer but doesn’t say how much they count. Keep them with every key and accessory, which its sell page asks you to bring to the appointment.
Not on one purchase. Carvana applies one trade-in per purchase and says it will buy a second car outright, sometimes at the same appointment and sometimes at a separate one.
