Will Carvana buy a car that doesn’t run? No: its help center accepts a vehicle only if Carvana is “able to safely drive” it, and the sale appointment checks that the car is in safe driving condition. A car that won’t start, or starts but can’t be driven safely, needs a repair or a different buyer.

Carvana’s help articles on selling, its sell page and its terms have no separate policy on non-running cars. The rule that decides it is in its requirements article, which the help center also links as the requirements for selling a car. As read on October 25, 2026, the article says Carvana will accept your vehicle when, among other conditions, “we are able to safely drive the vehicle.”
Its sell page describes the appointment where that gets checked: “We'll do a quick visual inspection, perform a simple diagnostic check, and ensure the vehicle is in safe driving condition.” So the car has to start, move under its own power and be safe on the road when you meet Carvana. The other two tests, and everything else Carvana turns away, are on what Carvana won’t buy.
The question is whether Carvana can drive the car safely, not whether the engine turns over. By that test, non-runners fall into three groups:
Does Carvana buy junk cars? Its selling pages never use the word. Whatever the car is called, it still has to pass the drive test and the 1992 model-year line, and nothing on Carvana’s selling pages mentions buying cars for parts or scrap.
A bad transmission. Transmissions aren’t mentioned either. One that no longer moves the car fails the drive test outright. One that slips but still drives is a condition question: describe it in the online answers, because the appointment includes a diagnostic check and a fault you left out can change the offer.
The online offer is built on your answers. Carvana’s offer article says the offer is valid for 7 days and won’t change at the appointment if your description was accurate, and that Carvana confirms the details there.
Calling a dead car a runner doesn’t get it sold. The User Agreement lets Carvana adjust or rescind its offer if you “misrepresented the condition of the vehicle.” The same clause covers bad luck: it also applies when “the vehicle condition deteriorated” between the offer and the handover. So if the car quits after you accept, Carvana can revise the offer or withdraw it.
Getting the car there is a problem too. Drop-off at a Carvana location is free, but a car that can’t be driven can’t make the trip. Pickup depends on your location, may carry a fee, and ends at the same safe-driving check.
A repair pays only when it adds more to the car’s value than it costs. Once the car drives safely and meets the other two tests, it is as eligible as any other car, and for a clean, newer car Carvana’s offer may well beat an as-is offer. So collect three numbers before you decide: the repair quote, what the car is worth running, and what it brings broken.
If you don’t know why it won’t start, why a car won’t start narrows it down. Fix it or junk it does the arithmetic, and selling a car with a bad transmission prices one of the biggest repairs.
Buyers who bring a truck. Our guide to selling a car that doesn’t run compares the kinds of buyer that take one, and what a junk car is worth gives you the scrap-metal floor.
Our buying partner is one of them. Its sell page says cars that don’t run or are missing parts “can still receive a cash offer,” lists engine failure and transmission problems as eligible, and covers the cost of pickup. If Carvana’s rule leaves your car out, get an offer for it as it sits; what it shows online is what you’re paid at pickup if the car matches what you described. We are not affiliated with Carvana, and for any car that passes its tests, its offer may be the higher one.
Not as a category. Its selling pages never mention junk or scrap cars, so a car sold as junk faces the same rule as any other: newer than 1992, a working odometer, and safe for Carvana to drive. Failing any one of those rules it out, whatever the car is called.
Only if the car can still be driven safely. Its selling pages don’t mention transmissions, so the drive test decides: one that won’t move the car rules it out, and one that slips but drives belongs in your condition answers, since the appointment includes a diagnostic check.
Tell Carvana before the appointment. Its User Agreement lets it adjust or rescind an offer if the car’s condition deteriorated between the offer and the handover, and the offer assumed a car that ran.
You can ask for one once it meets the rule. Carvana generates a new offer whenever you submit updated details, so request the number after the repair rather than before it.
