Does CarMax buy cars in any condition? Its limits, quoted

Does CarMax buy cars that are old, broken or banged up? Its selling FAQ says it is interested in “pretty much any car,” and one that misses the standard for its lots goes to its wholesale auction. The limits it states are few: leases with 21 named finance companies, and a sale without the title or other paperwork.

What cars will CarMax not buy?

Very few, going by CarMax's own pages. Asked “Will CarMax buy any car?”, its selling FAQ says it is “interested in buying pretty much any car” and wants to make an offer whether the car ends up on a CarMax lot or at its wholesale auction. Its sell page puts it more briefly: “Most qualify,” with some cars to be verified in person.

We read all 19 answers in that FAQ on October 25, 2026. Only one names cars CarMax “cannot purchase”: cars currently leased through 21 finance companies it lists by name. It says nothing either way about cars that don't run or carry a salvage brand; for those, only an appraisal answers.

We are not affiliated with CarMax. Every CarMax rule on this page comes from carmax.com, read on October 25, 2026 unless another date is given, so you can check it yourself before you go.

Old, broken, leased or wrecked: what CarMax says about each

A car that doesn't run. CarMax's selling FAQ doesn't mention a car that won't start or can't move. Its offer FAQ says CarMax may test drive a car “to check on certain mechanical conditions,” and its pickup answer says nothing about cars that need a tow. Our page on whether CarMax buys cars that don’t run covers what to ask before you pay to move one.

An older or high-mileage car. CarMax names no age or mileage limit, though it calls mileage one of the key factors in any appraisal. Its value page for a 1998 Cadillac DeVille, as archived on February 19, 2026, listed ten recent offers from $600 to $1,200. Does CarMax buy old cars? shows all ten with their mileage.

A leased car. Yes, unless the lease is with one of the 21 companies CarMax names, a list that includes Toyota Financial Services, Honda Financial, Ford Credit, GM Financial and Ally Financial. Our leased-car page prints the whole list and the steps if yours is on it.

A salvage title, or a damaged car. CarMax says it never sells a car with salvage history; it doesn't say whether it will buy one from you. Accident damage is clearer: a CarMax trade-in article says prior accident history “will be reviewed” in the appraisal and that any damage may affect the offer. Does CarMax buy salvage title cars? also covers wrecked and totaled cars.

Will CarMax buy my car without a title?

No, not without the title, or payoff information if a lender holds it. The first item on CarMax’s list of what you need to sell is “Your car's title or payoff information,” and it adds that all titleholders should be present. A 2021 CarMax article answers “Do I need the title to trade in my car?” with a plain “Yes.”

You can still get the offer first: CarMax says you don't need these papers to receive an offer, only to complete a sale. One detail is easy to miss: if a previously paid-off lien still shows on the title, CarMax wants the title and the lien release from that lender before it buys.

A lost title can be replaced through your state, and our table of duplicate title costs shows each state's fee. If you'd rather not wait, selling a car without a title lists who buys one. Peddle, the buyer behind our offer, says on a help page that it has “many buyers that buy cars without a title” and tells sellers to answer the title question with “Not sure, I can't find my title,” so you can get an offer that reflects the missing title and see what the car is worth without it.

Does CarMax buy cars with the check engine light on?

CarMax's selling FAQ never mentions warning lights. What it does say applies to any fault: the offer weighs the car's condition, CarMax may need a test drive to check mechanical problems, and an online offer changes only if the car's condition, use or history differs from what you reported.

A general selling guide on CarMax's site, written by an Edmunds writer and dated July 13, 2026, says scratches, dents and check engine lights “may not be a deal breaker” for dealerships, which ask about problems on the online offer form. That is advice about dealers in general, not a CarMax rule. So report the light on the form rather than hoping it goes unnoticed, and get the code read first; the reasons are in our guide to selling with the check engine light on.

Paperwork and pickup limits that can stop a sale

These come from CarMax's FAQ and its how-to-sell article, and CarMax notes that requirements vary from state to state.

If you can't meet one of these, CarMax's sell page says to “partner with your closest CarMax to learn how to proceed.” And once the car is sold, CarMax says that in most cases it can’t report the sale to your state for you; our guide to release of liability shows what to file.

When CarMax is the place to sell, and when to look elsewhere

For a clean, newer car with the title in hand, start with CarMax. Its offer is free, it is the same whether or not you buy a car there, and it stays valid for 7 days, long enough to compare it with a private sale or a dealer. Our guide to selling your car to CarMax walks through each step.

For a car with a problem CarMax won't take or prices low, a second number costs nothing. Our partner makes offers on cars that don't run and picks them up for free at a time that suits you, so compare CarMax’s offer with ours before you decide.

Common questions

What people ask about this

Does CarMax buy cars it won't sell on its own lot?

Yes. CarMax's FAQ says a car that “doesn't make the cut” for its lot goes to its wholesale auction. A 2023 CarMax article adds that such cars are sold to other dealers at CarMax-hosted auctions, which it calls the third-largest vehicle auction house in the U.S.

Can I get a CarMax offer without the title in hand?

Yes. CarMax says you need no paperwork to get an offer in a store; the title matters only when you go ahead and sell, and every titleholder should come with it.

What happens if CarMax finds a problem I didn't mention?

The number can change. CarMax checks every car in person when an online offer is redeemed, and it revises the offer when the car turns out different from the description it was given.

Does CarMax buy cars from businesses?

Yes. CarMax buys from businesses as well as people, but it needs authorization from an officer or president of the company to finish the purchase, and some states add requirements of their own.
