Eugene parking rules

Three places a Eugene car can sit, and the limit on each

  • Front yard: the paved driveway, 48 hours. On a residential lot, the code treats a car that's not in daily use like an RV or a boat trailer. In the front yard setback, the strip nearest the street, it may park only on the paved driveway, for no more than 48 hours in a row (Eugene Code 9.6745). Past 48 hours, the city says it must sit at least 10 feet from the property line (City of Eugene).
  • Street: current tags, 72 hours per block. A car without valid registration stickers or plates can't park on a public street. After 72 hours in one spot a car counts as stored, and only a move of at least two blocks resets the clock. Without a city permit, it then has to stay two blocks away for another 72 hours (City of Eugene).
  • UO lot: never from midnight to 5 a.m. Campus lots allow no parking from midnight to 5 a.m. except with an overnight or residential permit, and a car in a permit lot needs its plate linked to a permit (UO Transportation Services).

Cash for your car in Eugene

Eugene Code 6.800 is titled "Junk and Used Vehicle Accumulations." Under it, a used car, or any part of one, with no license plate or an expired plate can't be stored for 48 hours where it can be seen from the street or sidewalk next to it. That applies on private and public property, and the code also makes it a nuisance the city may abate (Eugene Code 6.800). Outside city limits, junk complaints go to Lane County Land Management at 541-682-3724 instead of the city (City of Eugene).

A car in that state can be sold as it sits: old, damaged, not running or only good for parts, it still gets a cash offer. Cash for junk cars in Eugene comes with the same free pickup as any other sale, and our page on how to sell a junk car covers the ones with no keys or no title.

Whether the engine seized, blew a head gasket or kept overheating, selling a car with engine problems goes through each case. A transmission that slips or won't go into reverse has its own page, selling a car with a bad transmission, and so does crash damage, in selling a damaged car.

Eugene questions

Asked by Eugene sellers

I sold my car, and a Eugene parking ticket came for it anyway. What do I do?

Send proof to Eugene Municipal Court, not Parking Services. Proof can be a bill of sale, DMV transfer-of-ownership records, or insurance papers showing the date the car came off your policy. The court is at 1102 Lincoln Street, and a review request doesn't pause the ticket's deadline (City of Eugene).

What happens to my Eugene residential parking permit when the car is sold?

The permit is digital and tied to your license plate, and the city doesn't refund permits. If you get another car, file a vehicle change request in your Parking Services Portal account. The city says skipping that step can get you a ticket (City of Eugene).

Can I get part of my UO parking permit back after I sell the car?

Possibly. Transportation Services refunds only term permits, and you ask through its online parking portal. Cancel a fall, winter or spring permit before Monday of the term's fourth week and you may get a partial refund (UO parking rules).

Eugene Police impounded my car before I could sell it. How do I get it out?

Pay a $125 administrative fee (cash, Visa or MasterCard), show you're the registered owner or lienholder, bring a licensed driver, and show insurance that lists the car by VIN (Eugene Police). Once it's out, pickup can come to wherever you park it.

Our Oregon selling guide covers what you sign and what you report to the DMV after the sale.
