Parking tickets

Clear Nashua parking tickets before pickup day

  1. Check for unpaid tickets. The Parking Department answers ticket questions at 603-589-3205 (parking tickets page).
  2. Pay before they reach $100. Under the parking ordinance as updated for 2025, once an owner’s unpaid non-moving fines reach $100, the owner owes another $100, and the car is towed and held until every fine and towing fee is paid (Ordinance O-24-014).
  3. Clear them before the next registration too. City Hall won’t process a new, transfer or renewal registration while any parking ticket is unpaid. For a car you’ve just bought, the Motor Vehicle Registration office at City Hall, 229 Main Street, books appointments online up to two weeks ahead, and you check in at a kiosk with your confirmation code.
Local pickup

Where we pick up around Nashua

Pickup is free across Nashua, down to the Massachusetts line, and in Hudson, Merrimack, Litchfield, Pelham, Windham and Amherst. Hollis, Milford and the towns west of them are covered too, though they can add a little routing time. Once you accept an offer, pickup can usually be scheduled within about 48 hours. If the car is in a downtown garage or a lot rather than a driveway, mention it when you book.

Need an overnight exception? If a registered car has to stay on the street past the two-hour limit before pickup, Nashua’s Parking Department takes requests at 603-589-3077 or through its online form. Get the request in by 11 p.m. for that night, with the plate number, make, model and color. Approval isn’t guaranteed.

Old, dead or unregistered

Cash for your car in Nashua

A car that won’t start runs into three city rules here. Between midnight and 6 a.m., parking on any public way is limited to two hours, every night, except on the downtown permit streets (Parking Department). A car with a lapsed registration can’t park on any public street or in any City-owned lot or garage at all, and the last owner of record pays for the tow (§ 320-77). And a 2025 amendment (O-25-052) cut the time a car can stand in one place before it counts as abandoned from 48 hours to 24. Abandoning a car carries a fine of at least $200 plus the towing cost (Chapter 315).

At home, Code Enforcement allows one unregistered vehicle per lot, parked on the driveway and not in the front-yard setback (Code Enforcement FAQ).

Cash for junk cars in Nashua starts like any other sale. Tell us the car is old, high-mileage, damaged or won’t start, get the offer, and we pick it up from wherever it sits. For a car that’s done for good, read about selling a junk car.

When a high-mileage car needs a big repair, like a head gasket, a knocking engine or a slipping transmission, selling a car with engine problems and selling a car with a bad transmission show when the fix is worth paying for and when selling it as it is makes more sense. For a dent or a bent frame, see selling a damaged car.

Snow emergencies

Where Nashua moves cars in a snow emergency

  • •Since 2019 the city’s snow emergency beacons come on before a snow emergency as well as during it, so there’s time to move cars. You can also call the Snow Emergency Information Line, 589-4795 (Snow Emergencies)
  • •Cars left on a street or in a municipal surface lot are towed to the Four Hills Landfill, 840 West Hollis Street. Getting one back takes proof of ownership and a $315 fine, paid in cash, by money order or by credit card (Motor Vehicle Registration)
  • •During a snow emergency, residents may park free in the High Street and Elm Street garages and at 25 Crown Street (City of Nashua)
Nashua questions

Asked by Nashua sellers

Can my plates go on the next car I buy in Nashua?

Only if the primary owner or lessee on the registration stays the same. Bring the current registration of the car you’re taking them from, according to the city’s transfer of registrations page. For the new car, the office accepts only the actual title as proof of ownership; photocopies and faxes are turned away (title transfer page).

I can’t find my title. Where in Nashua do I start a replacement?

With the state, not City Hall. Nashua’s registration office replaces lost registrations, plates and decals, but duplicate title applications come from the state Division of Motor Vehicles. Its nearest substation is at 110 Broad Street in Nashua (city FAQ). Our guide to selling a car without a title covers your options while you wait.

Which part of a Nashua registration counts as a deductible tax?

The City says only its municipal fees, the MOS/MILLS lines, can be deducted, as a personal property tax. The state portion can’t. Both amounts are printed in the box on the right side of the registration, and the office won’t give them out by phone or email (Motor Vehicle Registration). Keep a copy of the registration for the car you sold.

What a Massachusetts buyer needs to drive the car home is set by the state, not the city; our New Hampshire page has it, along with the title steps.
