Where Savannah handles tag and title business
- It's the Tax Commissioner. In Savannah, Georgia DMV business goes to the county tag office, run by the Chatham County Tax Commissioner. The Department of Revenue's list of county tag offices sends Chatham drivers there.
- Walk in downtown, on Eisenhower or on Police Memorial. 222 W. Oglethorpe Ave. is open weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; 1145 Eisenhower Dr. and 295 Police Memorial Dr. are open weekdays 8:30 to 5. The county posts current wait times for all three.
- Book ahead for the smaller stops. The Wilmington Island, Port Wentworth and Bloomingdale satellites are by appointment only and take no cash. The Mobile Tax Office works the same way. It sets up at Pooler City Hall on Mondays and Wednesdays, on Skidaway Island on Tuesdays and at Tybee City Hall on Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

From downtown Savannah (31401), pickups run west on US 80 to Pooler (31322) and Bloomingdale; east, the same road runs out to Tybee Island (31328). Garden City, Port Wentworth, Rincon, Richmond Hill, Wilmington Island and Whitemarsh are standard stops too. Island pickups take a touch more scheduling than a driveway in Pooler, so allow us an extra day or two.
Island pickup? Check the tide. When the Fort Pulaski tide gauge reaches 9.5 feet, the National Weather Service expects water on Tybee's Catalina Drive and Lewis Avenue and on Shipyard Road to Burnside Island. Savannah counts a car as derelict if it is inoperative, unlicensed or partly taken apart. Once a city code officer tags one, the owner has three days to comply, on public and private property alike. On a home lot, the city code allows an inoperable car only inside a legal accessory building, such as a garage (city code, Sec. 8-1003). A cover in the backyard doesn't count, says the city's Code Compliance guide, and a Recorder's Court hearing can bring fines up to $1,000 or 30 days in jail.

A car you ship or store on orders goes through PCSmyPOV, which has no processing center in Savannah. Its North Charleston, S.C., center posts directions for drivers coming from Savannah and Fort Stewart.
To sell it yourself on post, MWR runs a Lemon Lot across from Lincoln Cemetery off N. Middle Ground Road. Register the car first at Hunter Auto Skills, 140 Leonard Neal St., open Monday and Friday afternoons and on weekends. It needs current registration and insurance, and a car not signed up at an Auto Skills center is towed away at the owner's expense.

Yes, if you don't need a receipt. The Tax Commissioner keeps plate drop boxes at its Eisenhower Drive and Police Memorial Drive offices. For a receipt, hand the plate in at a county office instead. What you can't do, the county says, is throw an unused plate away.
Do Savannah police precincts let sellers meet buyers in their lots?
