The number

For 2026 registration the Repair Waiver minimum is $1,176 in emissions-related repairs. For 2025 registration it was $1,146. Georgia’s Clean Air Force publishes both figures side by side, which is unusually honest and tells you exactly how fast this moves.

What counts, and what disqualifies you

Two conditions catch people out. The failed inspection backing your application cannot be more than twelve months old, and it cannot be one already associated with a previous Repair Waiver — so you cannot lean on the same failure twice. Georgia will accept a diagnostic in place of the initial failing inspection, which helps. Labour you perform yourself does not count toward the total at all.

Why Georgia’s figure looks like this

When the number is bigger than the car

This is the arithmetic that makes Georgia the sharpest example in the country. On a 2005 sedan in Gwinnett or Cobb worth around $1,500, spending $1,176 to register a car that still fails, for one cycle, is close to spending the car’s whole value to rent it briefly. And because the emissions requirement attaches to the buyer at registration rather than to you as seller, handing the car on with the failure disclosed is a straightforward alternative rather than a complication.
