Wheel alignment vs balancing: what each one fixes

Alignment and balancing are sold together, confused constantly, and described almost entirely by the shops that sell them. This page separates the two mechanically, gives the measurements each one actually involves, and says where every published number came from.

Two different jobs, and the symptom that separates them

They get sold together, booked together and confused constantly, and they fix different faults. NHTSA's TireWise pages draw the line in two sentences: “Tire balancing ensures your wheels rotate properly and don't cause the vehicle to shake or vibrate”, and a wheel alignment “maximizes the life of your tires and prevents your car from veering to the right or left when driving on a straight, level road.”

The mechanics behind that split are worth holding on to, because they tell you which one you need without anyone putting the car on a rack. Balancing is about mass. A wheel and tire assembly that is heavier on one side throws that heavy spot outward once per revolution, and the force grows with speed, so the complaint is a vibration that arrives in a band of speeds and fades again. Nothing about it depends on which way the wheels are pointed. Alignment is about angles: where each wheel sits relative to the road, to the car's centerline and to the other wheels. Angles do not change with speed, so the complaints are constant ones. A pull. A steering wheel that sits crooked while the car goes straight. Tread worn down one side of a tire and not the other.

The machines are different too. Balancing happens off the car, on a spinner; a road-force machine adds a load-roller that presses on the tire while it turns, which is how a shop separates an ordinary imbalance from a stiff spot in the tire (Les Schwab, a tire chain, calls that force variation) or from radial and lateral runout in the wheel. Alignment happens with the car on a rack and a measuring head clamped to each wheel, read against the figures the vehicle's manufacturer publishes for that model.

Federal inspection rules are a good check on which of the two the government thinks it can put a number on. The vehicle-in-use standard has a limit for the shape of the wheel, “the lateral and radial runout of each rim bead area shall not exceed one-eighth of an inch of total indicated runout”, and a limit for toe. It has no balance limit at all. The word balance does not appear anywhere in that subpart.

NHTSA puts no interval on either job. It asks for monthly tire inspections and calls rotation, balancing and alignment recurring services without attaching a number to any of them. The one piece of timing it does state is about balancing: “New tires should always be balanced when installed.”

Camber, caster and toe, and whose numbers they are

Three angles, and each one is easier to keep straight if you fix the viewing position first.

The vocabulary is not a repair shop's invention. It belongs to SAE J670, Vehicle Dynamics Terminology, issued in July 1952, revised in January 2008 and reaffirmed in June 2022, whose published scope covers axis systems, suspension and steering systems, tires and wheels. The definitions sit behind SAE's paywall, so this page cites the standard rather than quoting it.

Which angle does what is described almost entirely by people who sell alignments, so take the following with the label attached. Les Schwab, a tire chain, heads its explainer “Toe is the Most Important Angle for Tire Life” and gives the reason: wheels pointing slightly toward or away from each other are “slightly skidding on the road surface”. It says camber out of range can cause “excessive tire wear” and changes how the car corners, and that caster “doesn't affect tire wear like camber” but does change steering and handling.

Now the part that governs everything else on this page. Federal inspection rules limit exactly one of the three angles: “Toe-in and toe-out measurements shall not be greater than 1.5 times the value listed in the vehicle manufacturer's service specification for alignment setting.” Camber and caster are not limited and not discussed; neither word appears anywhere in that subpart. And notice what the toe limit is. It is not a number. It is a multiple of a number somebody else publishes, which is the federal government stating in a regulation that the specification belongs to the carmaker.

The usual caveat on Part 570 applies here as it does to the bounce test: it is a model standard written for state inspection programs, it covers vehicles of 10,000 pounds gross weight or less, and it binds a state program rather than you or your mechanic.

A real spec, read off a manufacturer's own page

Nearly every manufacturer keeps its alignment figures in service information you have to pay for, which is why almost nothing written about alignment quotes one. Tesla publishes its service manual free to the public, so its numbers are the ones that can be shown here. For a coil-sprung Model 3, measured with ballast in the car:

Four things in that table generalize to any car. The spec is a window rather than a point, and a wide one: roughly half a degree either side on camber, a full degree on caster. Some of it is negative on purpose, so a car built to lean the tops of its rear wheels inward by a degree will wear its inner edges faster by design, and that is not a fault to be corrected. Front and rear carry different numbers. And the number depends on how the car is loaded: Tesla calls for “68 kg (150 lbs) ballast bags to simulate the presence of a driver and front passenger”, and its own no-ballast column reads -0.30° of front camber instead of -0.50°. A shop that skips the bags is measuring against a different line, which Tesla says outright: performing the procedure without them “compromises the real-world accuracy of the adjustments.”

The same page carries the sentence that decides whether a full alignment is even possible on a lot of cars: “The Model 3 and Model Y vehicles do not have dedicated adjustment points for camber and caster.” Those angles are set by the geometry as built, and a technician adjusting them is working within the slack in the suspension rather than turning a dedicated fitting.

That is not a Tesla quirk. General Motors' published body builder instructions for full-size C/K pickups say the trucks are designed so that camber and caster “do not need adjustment unless severe road impact or accident deformation occurs”, and send the reader to the Truck Service Manual for the specifications themselves, which is exactly where most manufacturers keep them.

Feet per mile: what a small toe error actually does

The federal rule does something no marketing page does. It converts toe into distance. The inspection procedure drives the car across a bar-type scuff gauge, which reads side-slip in feet per mile, and the regulation prints the conversion table so an inspector can turn a manufacturer's toe figure into a gauge reading. These are published numbers, not anybody's estimate:

Read the middle of that first line. A tire an eighth of an inch out of parallel on a 15-inch wheel is being dragged sideways about 23 feet for every mile the car drives forward. Over 12,000 miles that is 276,000 feet, about 52 miles of sideways scrubbing, done by a tire that is otherwise fine. That is the whole mechanism of toe wear, and that table is where the federal rules put a quantity on a misalignment.

Hunter Engineering, which makes alignment racks, publishes a rounder version of the same idea: “Every inch a vehicle is out of alignment is equivalent to dragging the tire sideways at 100 feet per mile”. Its own attribution, printed underneath, is “Statistics obtained from Tire Business”, a trade magazine, not a test. The closest row in the federal table is half an inch on a 15-inch wheel, at 92 feet per mile. Whether Hunter's inch is per wheel or measured across the axle is not stated, and the two figures only agree on the second reading.

What the tread is telling you, without a machine

This is the part of the subject a reader can act on alone, and it costs a tread depth gauge. Measure each tire in three places across its width: inner shoulder, center, outer shoulder. What you are looking for is not the depth itself but the difference between the three readings on the same tire.

Two cautions, and the first one is the reason this page quoted a real spec. A car whose manufacturer calls for a degree of negative camber at the rear is supposed to wear its inner edges faster. Inside-edge wear is evidence of a fault only when it is measured against that vehicle's own numbers, and those numbers are per model, per suspension and per ride height.

The second: a pull is not proof of anything. On its own page about a car pulling to one side, Les Schwab, which sells alignments, works through low pressure in one tire and uneven or mismatched tread before it reaches alignment, and puts brakes after it: a pull that shows up when you hit the brakes usually means one front brake is working and the other is not. Its list of the less obvious causes includes lane-departure correction on a car with driver assistance, and a tie rod or a lift kit fitted without a realignment. Federal inspection rules add the other candidate, which no alignment will fix: “Free play in the steering linkage shall not exceed one-quarter of an inch.” A worn joint moves under load, and a rack that measures a car with a worn joint is measuring the joint.

Is there a published interval? Everyone who publishes one sells something

Line up what the different parties actually print, and the spread is the answer.

So the published intervals run from never-unless-it-was-hit to twice a year, and the frequent end of that range is published by companies whose revenue depends on it. There is no manufacturer-independent interval. What the same sources agree on is a trigger list, and that part is checkable against your own car: a hard curb or pothole strike, fitting new tires, any suspension or steering part replaced, a ride height change, a pull, an off-center steering wheel, or uneven wear you can measure.

What it costs, and who publishes that figure

No federal statistic publishes a dollar price for an alignment. The closest thing that exists is a price index. The Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks the consumer price index item “Motor vehicle maintenance and repair” on a 1982-84 = 100 base: it read 320.504 in August 2021 and 465.136 in August 2026, about 45 percent higher across five years. That measures the direction of repair prices for a category. It says nothing about what one shop charges for one alignment, and it is not meant to. The same series carries a gap at October 2025, marked by BLS as “Data unavailable due to the 2025 lapse in appropriations”.

Which means every national average for an alignment in circulation was published by somebody with a stake in it. Jiffy Lube: “The national average for a complete wheel alignment service is between $50 to $168”, split into $50 to $75 for a front-end or two-wheel alignment and $100 to $168 for a four-wheel, with no source given for any of it.

A shop's own shelf price is more useful than an average, because it is a number somebody will honor. Les Schwab publishes its starting prices on its alignment page: a four-wheel alignment from $134.99 and a thrust angle alignment from $119.99, both carrying the note “This is a starting at price only”, and both advertised alongside a free visual alignment check. The chain also notes that it calibrates advanced driver assistance systems with the alignment where a vehicle needs it, which is one of the reasons a modern car's bill runs higher than an older one's.

The evidence for the benefit, and when it is not worth doing

The mechanism is real and measured: toe error scrubs the tire sideways, and the federal table says how far. What does not exist is an independent number for what that costs you in tire life, or for what misalignment does to stopping distance. The companies selling alignments do not publish one either. Les Schwab's pages claim longer tire life, better fuel economy and safer handling and attach no figure to any of the three. Hunter does attach a figure to the fuel half, “a decrease in fuel efficiency by up to 7%”, and credits it to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA and Energy Department's own fuel economy site does not mention alignment on its maintenance page at all; the figure it does publish there is for tire pressure, 0.6 percent on average and up to 3 percent.

On crash risk, the closest federal work is NHTSA's National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey, which investigated 5,471 crashes and assigned a critical reason to the driver in 5,096 of them, to the vehicle in 130, and to the road or the weather in 135. Within that small vehicle group, tire or wheel failure was the most common reason at about 43 percent and brakes second at 25 percent, while “steering/suspension/transmission/engine failure” accounted for 10.5 percent, all four lumped into one line. Alignment is not separated out anywhere in it. Anyone telling you that an alignment prevents crashes is extrapolating, not citing.

Three situations where paying for one is hard to justify:

If you are about to sell the car, the calculation changes again. A buyer feels a pull and sees a crooked steering wheel in the first minute of a test drive, and a careful one runs a hand around the inner shoulder of the front tires. Neither costs you anything to disclose, and both cost you the sale if the buyer finds them after you have said the car is fine.

What is the difference between a wheel alignment and a tire balance?

They fix different faults. NHTSA puts it this way: balancing stops the wheels causing the vehicle to shake or vibrate, while an alignment stops the car veering left or right on a straight, level road and makes the tires last. One tire is worn on the inside edge. Is that the alignment?

It might be the specification. Manufacturers routinely call for negative camber, so a Model 3 is built to run its rear wheels a degree in at the top and will wear those inner edges faster on purpose. Inside-edge wear only proves a fault when it is measured against that vehicle's own published numbers, and a worn ball joint or bushing can produce the same pattern without the alignment being set wrong at all.
