Sell your car in Pawtucket without running a listing. You get a real offer, and pickup is free of charge, whether the car is rusty, has high miles or hasn't started since winter. Until the truck comes, a car on a Pawtucket street has to clear out for winter parking bans and for street sweeping on recycling day.

Pickup day

Selling a car from a Pawtucket street or driveway

  1. Pickup comes to the car. Narrow street, tandem driveway or a mill-building lot out back: tell the driver which, and say if the car is boxed in, because it decides how the flatbed sets up.
  2. The paperwork happens at the car. The title work gets done at pickup, and the car doesn't leave until you've been paid. Not sure your papers are in order? Tell us what documents you actually have, and we'll tell you what's workable.
Local pickup

Where we pick up around Pawtucket

We buy cars in Pawtucket on both sides of the Blackstone River, in 02860 and 02861, and pickup comes to you. It also covers the neighbors, from Central Falls and Lincoln to North Providence and East Providence, plus Smithfield. The truck runs up the valley regularly through Cumberland and Valley Falls to Woonsocket, where a pickup is booked just like one downtown. A car that hasn't started since last winter is still a scheduled pickup.

Check your recycling day before you book. The city sweeps streets on the same day it collects recycling, with a parking ban and ticketing from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., per the city's sweeping schedule. If yours sits on the street, book a different day or get it off the street that morning.

Ban season and the station lot

Where a car can wait in Pawtucket until pickup

From December 1 to April 1, the city declares a winter storm emergency when two or more inches of snow are forecast, and a car left on the street during the parking ban is towed at the owner's expense or fined $100. To check whether a ban is on, call the police station at 401-727-9100 and dial extension 888, or text PawtucketRI to 38671 to sign up for CodeRED alerts, one of the ways the city announces bans.

The commuter lot won't hold a spare car either. The Pine Street lot at the Pawtucket/Central Falls station is free during the day, but as of September 2026 the MBTA lists overnight parking there as not available. So the car you no longer drive stays on your street or in your driveway until it's sold.

Dead, junk or rusted through

Cash for your car in Pawtucket

Junk cars in Pawtucket fall under Chapter 383 of the city code, which says no one may leave an abandoned or nonoperational vehicle on public or private property for more than three days. Nonoperational means wrecked, dismantled or not running, and missing either an unexpired plate or a current inspection sticker. A car kept inside a building on private property is exempt.

If the police or the Division of Zoning and Code Enforcement find one on private property, the owners get a written notice to remove it within three days, and the notice includes a summons to Municipal Court. A car leaking fuel or another harmful substance can be towed at once, with no notice. After a tow, the owner has three weeks from the police notice to pay the towing and storage charges and get it back, or it can go to public auction. For an abandoned car on private property, the fine can reach $500. Selling before a notice arrives avoids all of that: you can sell your junk car in the shape it’s in, and the offer reflects the condition you report.

Not running because the engine overheated, knocked or blew a head gasket? Selling a car with engine problems explains what each of those failures means for a sale, selling a car with a slipping transmission does the same for transmission trouble, and selling a car with accident damage covers a wrecked one.

Pawtucket questions

Asked by Pawtucket sellers

My car has a Massachusetts title. Do I need the Pawtucket police VIN check to sell it?

The police describe the VIN check as a step before you register a car: it's required for model year 2001 or newer when the title or the last registration is from another state. If you do need one, the VIN station at police headquarters, 121 Roosevelt Avenue, runs Monday to Thursday, 8:30 to 11:45 a.m., and can close in bad weather. Since July 1, 2025 it costs $25, cash or money order only, and you bring the car and its original title (with a lien, a copy of the title will do), per the police department. If you're selling instead of registering, the sale itself is covered in our out-of-state title guide.

I still owe Pawtucket old car tax. What does the city want?

Payment at the Tax Collector's Office in City Hall, Room 110, first floor. If the tax has put a block on your registration, every motor vehicle tax on the account must be paid in full by cash, money order or certified bank check before the office gives you a clearance or emails a release, for renewal only. Pay by personal check and the release waits 15 business days unless you show the check cleared. An old bill doesn't go away with the car: the state can take unpaid 2011 to 2019 city motor vehicle tax out of your Rhode Island income tax refund, and interest runs at 13% a year, per the Tax Collector's FAQ.

Snow is coming. Can you pick the car up from a parking-ban lot?

If a ban is declared before pickup, move the car to one of the city's ban lots like everyone else, and it gets picked up from wherever you put it. Tell us which one: most are school lots, such as Winters School at 481 Broadway or Nathanael Greene School at 285 Smithfield Avenue, and the front lot at City Hall is on the list too. Cars must be out of those lots within two hours after the ban lifts or they risk a fine and a tow, so plan pickup around that window. Pickup can usually be set before a ban if you ask early in the week the snow is forecast.

Where do I get a Pawtucket police report for damage to the car?

From the police Records Division, by mail or in person, using the department's Request for Police Report Form. By mail it's $5 for one report and you include a legal-size, self-addressed stamped envelope; in person it's 15 cents a page. Accident reports can also be bought online, and most requests take 1 to 3 days, per the police FAQ.

Statewide paperwork, from the title and bill of sale to the plates, is on our Rhode Island selling guide.
