Sell your car in Erie: running or not, rusted or storm-damaged

A car that sits through an Erie winter still has to follow the city's street rules, even when it won't start. Get a fair, guaranteed cash offer for it, running or not, and a pickup where it sits. Pickups run all year, whatever the forecast. If lake-effect snow shuts your street on the day, the appointment moves, not the offer.

Snow-covered SUV in an Erie driveway with lake-effect snow banked high - selling a car in Erie
Towed before the sale

If the city towed it first

  • Find out where it went. Erie's code has the police send the owner of record a notice within 24 hours naming the pound, and keep a record of every impounded car and where it's stored. The police non-emergency line is (814) 870-1125.
  • Pay before it leaves the pound. No car comes out of an approved storage garage until the towing and storage charges are paid, and storage is charged by the day (Article 527).
  • Think the tow was wrong? Pay “under protest.” The code treats a payment made without protest as final. With it, you can appeal to the Towing Review Board. Send its appeal form to the City Solicitor's Office, 626 State St., Room 505, or to towingreview@erie.pa.us.
Local pickup

Where we pick up around Erie

Pickup covers the whole city, from the bayfront to the south city line, and the townships around it. That includes Millcreek, the largest suburb. It reaches east through Wesleyville, Lawrence Park and Harborcreek, west through Fairview to Girard, and out to North East and Edinboro. If your street or lane hasn't been plowed since the last band came through, say so when you book. The pickup is scheduled around the weather.

Leave it on the driveway until pickup. Erie's code says a car kept on your property belongs on a driveway or parking lot, not the lawn. Don't move it to the curb across the end of your driveway either. The Erie Parking Authority tickets any car that sticks into a driveway, even the owner's own.

Stuck at the curb

Cash for your car in Erie

The Erie Parking Authority enforces a city ordinance that no car may sit on a city street for more than 72 hours without moving. After a complaint, it runs a 72-hour check and hands an unmoved car to the police, who decide when it gets removed. The traffic code goes further on a snow emergency route that's snow-covered or under a parking ban: you may not let a car stall there because the battery died or the tank ran dry, and a stalled car has to be towed or pushed off. Raising the hood doesn't excuse it (Article 512).

Keeping it at home has limits too. Under the city's quality-of-life rules, one property may hold no more than one inoperable or unlicensed car. A ticket for breaking that rule is $100. Leave it unpaid for 10 days and it becomes a citation before a district judge, where a conviction carries a fine of $300 to $1,000 (Article 1129).

Old, rusted, damaged or dead, the car still gets a guaranteed offer as it is, with the tow built into it; that is what cash for cars in Erie, PA means here. Tell us what it does and doesn't do. If it's only worth parts, our junk car page explains how cash for junk cars in Erie works.

If a tree came down on the car in the September storms, selling a car with storm damage explains why to call your insurer before you sell, and selling a totaled car covers the payout and the salvage title if it's written off. When the trouble is a blown head gasket or an engine that overheats, selling a car with engine problems weighs repairing it against selling it.

Street rules by season

Erie's parking calendar

  • •From Nov. 1 to March 31, posted inner-city streets allow parking on one side by odd or even date, enforced weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. From April 1 to Oct. 31, those streets typically lose parking one weekday a week instead (source)
  • •City street sweeping also runs April 1 through Oct. 31, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Move cars during the hours posted on your street (source)
  • •Snow emergency routes include State Street from 38th Street to Front Street, Peach Street from the south city line to North Park Row, and East and West 38th Street. The code calls for a sign in every block: “Snow Emergency Route. No Parking During Emergency. Snow Tires or Chains Required. Tow-Away Zone.” (source)
  • •A snow emergency parking ban can't take effect until at least two hours after it's announced, and the announcement has to come between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. In bad weather the city can also extend the inner-city odd/even rule to Saturday and Sunday (source)
Erie questions

Asked by Erie sellers

Can I sign my car title at the PennDOT center on Peach Street?

No. PennDOT's Erie Driver and Photo License Center, at 7200 Peach St., is open Tuesday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., and its listing covers licenses, photos, REAL ID and driving tests, not titles. PennDOT, which many people call the PA DMV, handles titles at its Harrisburg counter or through an authorized agent. Around Erie that means an authorized PennDOT agent, such as a notary or tag service.

A tree fell on my car in the September 2026 storm. What do I do first?

Call your insurance company. After the Sept. 2–3 storms, the City of Erie asked residents to do that first, then call the Streets Department at (814) 870-1340 to remove the tree. Pennsylvania's Disaster Recovery Assistance Program takes applications from eligible Erie City and Millcreek residents until Dec. 24, 2026. It asks for your car insurance declarations page if you want help with a damaged vehicle. If you'd rather not repair the car, read our guide to selling a damaged car.

How do I sell a car that belonged to someone who died in Erie County?

If the car has to go through the estate, that starts at the Erie County Register of Wills, Room 122 of the county courthouse. It opens estates by appointment only, in person or by video call, and wants the papers and filing fee first: the petition for grant of letters, an estate information sheet, a certified copy of the death certificate and the original will, if there is one. Our guide to transfer-on-death car titles covers the title side.

Who can tell me whether my car has unpaid parking tickets in Erie?

The City of Erie's Parking Collections office, at (814) 870-1187. Have the plate number ready when you call. Ticket status comes from that city office, not from the Erie Parking Authority.

Say whether it starts, where it's parked (driveway, curb or a snow emergency route) and where the salt has reached. Rust lowers an offer; describing it up front keeps the quote from changing at pickup. A February quote is a real quote.
