Car errands on one street

Jeffers Street: the county counter, the Sheriff and a snow route

  • Lincoln County Treasurer, 301 N. Jeffers, Room 102. Titles and plates for cars kept in the county go through this counter in the courthouse, open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and through the noon hour. The motor vehicle line is (308) 534-4350 ext. 4142. It takes check, cash or card, with a card fee, and a returned payment costs $25 (Lincoln County Treasurer).
  • Lincoln County Sheriff, 302 N. Jeffers. Out-of-state title inspections are done at the south door, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., with parking spots set aside on the south side of 3rd Street. Bring cash: the Sheriff's Office doesn't take credit cards (Lincoln County Sheriff).
  • Jeffers itself is a snow route. It's a first-priority emergency snow route from the north city limits to the south (2023-24 snow route list). Once a snow emergency is declared, cars must be off it. One left there gets a $35 ticket and is then towed, and the owner pays for the tow and storage (City of North Platte).

Junk cars and city code

Cash for your car in North Platte

Junk cars in North Platte are on the city's list of typical nuisances. Its two Code Compliance officers cover the whole city, and when a complaint comes in, an officer visits the property and the ones around it. If there's a violation, the owner gets 10 days to fix it, then a second notice, served in person, with five more days. After that the case goes to the City Attorney and on to court, where the owner may be fined, the city may get an injunction to clear the nuisance itself, or the case may be dismissed (City of North Platte).

A car doesn't have to run to get an offer, and high miles or body damage don't rule it out either. Say whether it rolls and where it sits, and pickup is planned around that. If it's only good for scrap, start from our junk car page.

Body damage from a crash is covered in selling an accident-damaged car. If the engine or transmission is why it sits, see selling a car with a blown head gasket or seized engine or selling one whose transmission slips or has no reverse.

North Platte questions

Asked by North Platte sellers

Can a buyer in Lincoln County title my dead car if it has an out-of-state title?

Not until it runs. Before Lincoln County issues a Nebraska title for a car titled in another state, the Sheriff's Office has to inspect the car and the title, and the Sheriff's Office says the car must be in running order. It also won't do the inspection unless the major parts, such as the engine, transmission, doors and frame, are attached (Lincoln County Sheriff). A passed inspection is good for 90 days. Keep that in mind before you list a dead car for a local buyer.

Is there a ride around town if I sell my only car in North Platte?

The city runs North Platte Public Transit from 1520 N. Jeffers. A same-day ride in town costs $4, or $2 if you book by 1 p.m. the day before. It also goes to Sutherland, Hershey and Maxwell for $10 one way, booked the day before. Call (308) 532-1370. It runs 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday (City of North Platte).

Where do I get a towed car back in North Platte?

At the police station, 701 S. Jeffers. The North Platte Police Records Division releases impounded and stored vehicles and collects parking fines. It's open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and closed weekends and holidays. The number is (308) 535-6789.

Signing a Nebraska title and handling the plates are covered once, on our Nebraska page.
