How a car left on a city street ends up towed
- The first visit. Under the department's towing order (approved September 2019), a car counts as abandoned when it has been illegally parked on public property for more than 48 hours and has no current tags or looks like it can't run. The officer checks whether it's stolen, runs the registration, tries to reach the owner, leaves a courtesy citation and chalks the tires.
- The 48-hour check. An officer comes back to see whether the chalk marks have moved. If the car hasn't, that goes on an abandoned vehicle report, and a supervisor sends it on for follow-up.
- The certified letter. The department sends the registered owner a notice by certified mail. Ten days later the case goes back to patrol for one more check, and if the car still hasn't moved, it's towed (General Order 290).
Where we pick up around Frederick
We buy cars all over Frederick, in the city's 21701, 21702 and 21703 ZIP codes and well past them. Ballenger Creek and the Golden Mile are five-minute detours for our drivers, and the Urbana corridor gets regular runs; none of it is the edge of the map. Pickups reach the towns around Frederick out to Thurmont, Brunswick and Mount Airy, gravel lanes and long rural driveways included. Wherever the car is, the driver comes to it, checks it over, and pays before it rolls away.
Plates after hours: the Maryland MVA's Frederick branch (Maryland's version of the DMV) has a 24-hour Tag Return Box, so the plates can go back even if the car leaves after the branch closes.
Cash for your car in Frederick
Inside city limits, a car you no longer drive can stay at home only on the city's terms. The City of Frederick's code enforcement office allows one unlicensed vehicle on your property, and only if it sits under a fitted car cover, not a tarp, and is in good condition.
That rules out a second dead car, the one under a blue tarp, and the one that isn't in good shape anymore. We make offers on all of them, whether they're old, high-mileage, damaged or not running, and pickup from the driveway is free. If yours is past repair, our junk car offer is how you get cash for junk cars in Frederick.
Parked it because the shop quoted an engine or transmission job? Our guides to a blown engine, a knock or overheating and a slipping or failed transmission lay out when the repair is worth doing and when selling it as it is makes more sense.

Asked by Frederick sellers
A snow emergency was just declared in Frederick and my car won't start. How long do I have?
Two hours, if it's parked on one of the city's Snow Emergency Routes. Parking on those routes is banned starting two hours after the declaration, and cars left there can be towed at the owner's expense. The routes are signed and include stretches of Market Street, Patrick Street, East Street and Rosemont Avenue. Declarations go out on CoFAlerts, the city's website and the Emergency Info Line at 301-600-1300.
Can I park the car I'm selling on the lawn to free up the driveway?
Not inside Frederick city limits. The city's code enforcement office says a vehicle may not be parked on grass, mulch or any other surface that isn't paved. Keep it on the driveway or another paved spot until pickup day.
Can the car wait in a downtown city garage for a few days before it sells?
Only if you set it up with the city first, and you may have to pay ahead. The Parking Department says vehicles shouldn't be left in its garages longer than 48 hours without notice, and cars left longer may be towed at the owner's expense. Call (301) 600-1429 before you leave it.
Will the county take the spare tires and old car battery I cleared out with the car?
Yes, at the Reichs Ford Road Landfill & Recycling Center, 9031 Reichs Ford Road, open Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Car batteries go to the recycling drop-off with no fee. Tires are limited to five per resident per year under Maryland Department of the Environment rules, and disposal transactions carry a $10 minimum. The site takes only waste from Frederick County, so bring a driver's license with a county address or a utility bill that shows one.
Our Maryland selling page covers what the title needs and when the plates are due back, so read it before a trip to Bowmans Farm Road.
