Pickup truck in the gravel side drive of a Peoria foursquare home with river-valley haze - selling a car in Peoria
If the city towed it first

Getting a towed car back before you sell

  1. Call the Police Information Office. The Peoria Police Information Office, at 309-494-8301, tells you the impound fees and where the car is being held. The tow company from the city's rotation list may add its own towing charges.
  2. Don't let it sit. Storage fees begin 24 hours after the car reaches the impound lot.
  3. Bring what the release requires. That is a picture driver's license or state ID card, valid proof of ownership and proof of insurance for the car, even if it leaves the lot on a tow truck. If the car was part of a police investigation, the assigned detective also has to send a release memo to the Information Office.
Local pickup

Where we pick up around Peoria

Pickup is free on both sides of the Illinois River, and crossing it doesn't add a fee or a day. It covers the whole city plus Peoria Heights, Bartonville, Dunlap and Chillicothe, and across the river it covers East Peoria (61611), Pekin (61554), Morton and Washington. The car can wait at home, or at a job site if that's where it's parked.

Winter pickup? Once two inches of snow accumulate, Peoria bans parking on city streets for 48 hours or until the ban is lifted. Cars left out are ticketed and towed, and the fine starts at $250. On a marked Snow Route the ticket is $50 for every 24 hours the car isn't moved, and it can be towed. A car that won't start can't be driven out of the plows' way, so weigh that before the first forecast of the season.

Tagged, stalled or past fixing

Cash for your car in Peoria

Junk cars in Peoria are handled by two city teams. Code Enforcement inspectors deal with a car on private property, and police deal with one on the street. An inspector who finds a violation tags the car with a green sticker, takes photos and comes back on the 6th day. If the problem is still there, a citation may be issued. What the city counts as inoperable is in the questions below.

Getting cash for cars in Peoria, IL doesn't require a car that runs. An old, damaged or dead car still gets a firm, same-week number, and the pickup is free. That includes a car your insurer totaled and let you keep, once the claim is closed and the title is in your hands. If the car has already been tagged, you can sell the junk car as it is instead of fixing it for the recheck.

If your insurer has just called it a total loss, selling a totaled car lays out the payout-or-keep choice, what a buyback costs and the salvage title that follows. For a car that is damaged but not totaled, selling an accident-damaged car explains what you have to tell a buyer.

Peoria questions

Asked by Peoria sellers

Where do I replace a lost title in Peoria?

Go to the Illinois Secretary of State facility (the Illinois DMV, in everyday terms) at 3311 N. Sterling Ave. #12 (309-686-6040). Duplicate titles are on its vehicle services list, and it is one of the offices that offer Expedited Title Service. Appointments there are required for driver services. The Pekin facility, at Pekin State Plaza, 200 S. 2nd, is not on the state's list for expedited titles.

What counts as an inoperable car in Peoria?

Code Enforcement treats a car as inoperable if it has a flat tire, a broken windshield or an expired State of Illinois registration sticker, or if it hasn't moved or shown that it runs. The city's vehicle rules also say cars have to be parked on pavement or another hard surface, not on grass, and an inoperable car has to be moved or stored indoors.

How would I know if a car on my property has been tagged?

Peoria's Code Violation Notification System sends a text or email when a vehicle on a registered property is tagged. You sign up with the parcel number, an email address and a phone number. The city calls the alerts a courtesy, so missing one doesn't excuse a citation.

Do the same rules apply in East Peoria or in unincorporated Peoria County?

Neither one uses the City of Peoria's code. Each enforces its own. East Peoria requires cars and trucks that don't run or don't have current tags to be kept in an enclosed garage or removed, and a car in the driveway has to be licensed and running, never on the lawn or on dirt. In unincorporated Peoria County, the county's own Code Enforcement office handles inoperable vehicles under county codes.

Can a car that won't start sit on a street near the riverfront overnight?

Not in the district bounded by Jackson Street, the Illinois River, Kumpf Boulevard and Glendale Avenue. City code makes it unlawful to park on any street there for more than two hours between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., including on Jackson, Kumpf and Glendale themselves.

The paperwork is the same in every Illinois town, so it has its own page: selling a car in Illinois.
