Where we pick up around Sioux Falls
Pickup is free anywhere in Sioux Falls and in the towns around it, on both sides of the county line. On the Minnehaha County side that means Brandon, five miles east, plus Hartford, Crooks and Dell Rapids. On the Lincoln County side it means Harrisburg, Tea and Canton, the county seat, 18 miles south, and Lennox is in the pickup area too. A Tea driveway and a downtown apartment curb are both ordinary stops; at an apartment building, curbside works fine with a heads-up, and payment lands before the car rolls.
Lock it while it waits. Sioux Falls police say more than 8 out of 10 vehicles stolen in the city had the keys inside (SFPD, Lock It and Pocket). Keep the keys with you until the handoff.
Cash for your car in Sioux Falls
A car that doesn’t run can become the city’s business before it sells. The city’s code enforcement rules list “nonworking vehicles and parts” among the nuisances a property owner has to keep off the outside of a home, and neighbors can report one through the City of Sioux Falls app.
If yours won’t start, the junk car offer is where cash for junk cars in Sioux Falls begins: say it doesn’t run, and the offer is made on that basis.
If it still runs but carries dents from the May 12, 2022 derecho, which NWS Sioux Falls says blew vehicles off several roads and shut down I-29 and I-90, see our guide to selling a damaged car.
If the insurance company called it a total loss after a storm or a crash, selling a totaled car covers the payout, the buyback and the salvage title. If the engine blew or the transmission gave out, see selling a car with a blown engine or selling a car with transmission failure.

Asked by Sioux Falls sellers
Which county treasurer handles my title in Sioux Falls?
It depends on the address. The Minnehaha County Treasurer, on the first floor of the Administration Building at 415 N. Dakota Ave., titles and registers vehicles only for people with a Minnehaha County address (Minnehaha County; 605-367-4211). Addresses on the Lincoln County side, in the city or in the towns listed above, go to the Lincoln County Treasurer at 104 N. Main St. in Canton (Lincoln County; 605-764-5701). Looking for the South Dakota DMV? Title work happens at these county treasurers, on the motor vehicle system the state runs from Pierre.
Can the Minnehaha County Treasurer give me the seller's permit over the phone?
No. Staff print the free permit at the counter, or you print it yourself under your own account on my605Drive. The office says it can't do them over the phone (what to bring).
My lender still holds the title. How does the Minnehaha office handle that?
Give the treasurer the lender's fax number and the vehicle information. The office faxes the lienholder, calls you when the title arrives, and finishes the transfer (Minnehaha County Treasurer). The payoff side is covered in our guide to selling a car with a loan.
Do I get Minnehaha County's wheel tax back after I sell?
No. Minnehaha County says wheel tax is no longer refunded on noncommercial refund applications (title information). Ask the treasurer at 605-367-4211 whether any state fees come back before you file Refund Request Form 1600, which must be printed, signed and handed in at the county treasurer's office (SD DOR).
Title signing, the seller’s permit and plates follow the same state rules in both counties: see selling a car anywhere in South Dakota.
