Sedan outside a Syracuse two-family house in falling snow - selling a car in Syracuse
If it won’t start this winter

Getting a stuck car to pickup day

  1. Have it moved off an emergency snow route. City code covers this from November through March. It's an offense to let a car stall or get stuck on a designated emergency snow route unless its drive wheels have snow tires or chains. Police can have it removed, and the owner pays for that.
  2. Main roads get plowed first. City crews clear more than 400 miles of streets, starting with main roads, emergency routes and hills. Residential streets come after the main roads and emergency routes are clear and the snow has stopped.
  3. Book a window that works even if it snows. If the car is plowed in, say so when you book. Our drivers carry shovels.

Where we pick up around Syracuse

Onondaga County is the City of Syracuse plus 19 towns and 15 villages, and free pickup reaches all of them and some ground past the county line. The biggest of the towns is Clay, home to more than 60,000 residents. That puts a driveway in Clay, the Village of Liverpool, Baldwinsville or Fayetteville in range, along with every street in the city.

Pay or dispute a Syracuse ticket within 20 days. After that a penalty is added, and once a ticket is 90 days old it goes to collection and can't be disputed (City of Syracuse). The Parking Violations Bureau is in City Hall, Room 113, 233 E. Washington St.

City code, Chapter 16

Cash for your car in Syracuse

Cash for cars in Syracuse, NY doesn't depend on the car running. A car that has sat for years still gets a real offer, whatever the drivetrain. One that won't start is loaded onto the truck by winch, and pickup is still free. Letting it sit has a cost inside city limits. Chapter 16, Article 15 of the city code bans keeping an abandoned, junked or discarded car outdoors on public or private property. A car counts as junked when fixing it would cost more than its top retail value. Each violation can bring a fine of up to $150. If yours is past fixing, start with our page on cash for junk cars.

If it's been sitting since the engine seized or a head gasket blew, selling a car with a seized or blown engine helps you decide whether the repair is worth paying for. For a transmission that stopped shifting or lost reverse, selling a car with a bad transmission sorts out what may have failed, from a fluid change to a full replacement.

Parked downtown, November to April

When the car has to switch sides

From November 1 to April 1, signed blocks downtown limit overnight parking to one side of the street at a time, and the side alternates, so plows can clear the street between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. (City of Syracuse). Those blocks include parts of Erie Blvd. E., S. Warren St. and Madison St., and cars on the wrong side face ticketing and towing. A car with a dead battery can't make the switch. Before the storm of January 25 and 26, 2026, the city warned that police would be ticketing and towing illegally parked cars.

From city code

If the car sits in a private lot

  • •A tow off private property in Syracuse without your permission can cost no more than $150 plus tax, including the first 24 hours of storage (Sec. 46-10)
  • •Storage after that is capped at $40 a day, and no mileage fee is allowed (Sec. 46-10)
  • •Get there before it's hooked up and you can take the car at no charge. If it's hooked up but hasn't left, release costs $100 at most (Sec. 46-10)
  • •The rules cover lots other than homes with fewer than five units, and the lot needs a posted sign that shows the towing fee (Sec. 46-10)
Syracuse questions

Asked by Syracuse sellers

Can junk cars in Syracuse sit in a driveway until pickup?

Not if the city counts the car as abandoned, junked or discarded. The code judges abandonment by the car's condition, how long since it was last driven on a public road, and whether it's registered. Neighbors can report one through SYRCityline, where “Junk Cars/Yard Debris” is its own request category. If police find a violation, they put a sticker on the car saying it will be towed unless it's removed immediately.

Can an unregistered or uninspected car wait on a Syracuse street for pickup?

It can get ticketed while it waits. The city's list of parking violations includes both an unregistered vehicle and an uninspected vehicle.

What is the sales tax rate in Syracuse if I'm buying my next car?

8%. That's the combined state and local rate for Onondaga County in New York's rate table, effective March 1, 2025. The table lists no separate rate for the city of Syracuse.

Where can I buy an E-ZPass in Syracuse for my next car?

The Onondaga County Clerk's Office sells them for $25 as an authorized NYS Thruway E-ZPass On-the-Go retail location. It's at 401 Montgomery St., Room 200, open weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tag has to be registered with E-ZPass before you use it. Take the old tag out of the car you're selling before pickup.

Signing and plates follow the same rules anywhere in New York, and a title from another state works if it's in your name; our New York page and out-of-state title guide cover both.
