Four rules on half a page, signed by the seller and the buyer together, for a mistake already written into a title assignment. It is the only thing Rhode Island publishes for an error on the back of a certificate - and its own instruction line is the sting: please use attached MVT-10 for correct title assignment, which is a controlled form a private seller cannot obtain.

Get the buyer's signature on this before they leave with the car, if the mistake is spotted at the kerb. Once they have driven away the correction depends entirely on their goodwill, and Rhode Island offers a seller no way to fix an assignment single-handed.

Two statements, two signatures, and a block at the foot that is not yours. Both parties sign - which is why this is a form to complete in the driveway rather than a week later. The MVT-10 the instruction line names is a controlled form the DMV issues only to licensed dealerships.

What gets this one rejected
•One signature. The sheet has two X rules, one for the seller and one for the buyer, because a correction to an assignment changes what both of them certified.
•A description that does not name the box. Error and correction have two rules each and the DMV is matching them against a specific entry on a specific certificate.
•A correction to an odometer reading offered on this sheet alone. Mileage corrections have their own tick on the TR-2/TR-9, under CORRECTION, and that is a paid title transaction of its own.
•A letter sent without the certificate it corrects.
•A private seller writing anything into the DMV use block at the foot - the MVT-10 control number, the title number and the title state are the office's.
•Using it to change who the buyer is. A correction fixes what was miswritten; it does not undo an assignment to one person and re-execute it to another.
Rules that decide whether it is accepted
•The MVT-10 is not available to you. The instruction on this sheet points at it, and the DMV's application for the form says who may hold one: it is a controlled form tracked by the RI DMV, to be used by your dealership only, and it may NOT be shared with or loaned to anyone. A private seller correcting an assignment is relying on the Research Office to attach one, not obtaining it themselves.
•Prevention is cheaper than the cure. The other way out of a spoiled assignment is a duplicate certificate on the TR-2/TR-9 - the full title fee, a notary, and section 31-3.1-11(b)'s fifteen-day wait before the DMV will issue to a buyer on an application made on a duplicate.
•Rhode Island's own standard for corrected paper. The DMV's bill of sale states the general rule for title documents in this state in one line - any alterations or erasures will void this bill of sale. Correcting an assignment in place with a pen is not a repair, it is a second problem.
•It needs the buyer, who has already gone. This is the practical difficulty. Both signatures are required, and the person who has to give the second one is somebody who has your car and no reason to make a special trip.
