How to fill out Montana MV24T

Montana authorises remote online notarisation on any document requiring notarisation except a title. This form is the workaround the division built for that gap: it takes the place of the interest release section of the title, so an owner who cannot appear in person signs here in front of a remote notary instead of on the certificate. It is the most useful page in the whole library for a different reason too - its body is the certificate's own release sentence, reprinted, which is as close as the division comes to publishing what a Montana title actually says. Since October 2025 an ordinary sale needs no notary at all, so this now belongs to the narrow cases where one is still wanted or where an out-of-state party expects one.

Written against MV24T (12/24), issued under prescribed by the Motor Vehicle Division; released for public use 1 April 2023. Read the release sentence in the middle of this page slowly, because it is what you are signing on the certificate as well: you are warranting the title against the claims and demands of all persons except the secured party noted on the application. If there is a lender you have not mentioned, that sentence is where the problem surfaces.

Two documents, and they are not the same thing. Take the blank MV24T from the mvdmt.gov copy so you get the revision that is current today, then print our MV24T guide and keep it beside you while you fill theirs in.

   The sum received

   The consideration, in the release sentence that transfers your right, title and interest.

   Watch out: This figure should match the MV24 and the buyer's application. Three documents in one envelope disagreeing about the price is the sort of thing a counter stops on.

   You fill this in

   The purchaser

   Name, identification number and address of the person taking the vehicle.

   Watch out: The same person has to appear as the buyer on the title. The manual's rule that the person who signs must be the buyer written on the title applies to this form's chain as well.

   You fill this in

   The vehicle, by Montana title number

   MT title number, year, make and the VIN or hull number.

   Watch out: The title number matters more here than anywhere else, because this sheet is being read alongside the certificate it partly replaces.

   The buyer fills this in

   The purchaser signs and acknowledges the mileage

   Signature, printed name and date, above the line acknowledging the seller's odometer certification.

   Watch out: There is no mileage on this form. What the buyer is acknowledging is the certification made on the title or on the MV90A, so make sure one of those actually exists.

   You fill this in

   Every owner signs - remotely, before the notary

   Signature, printed name, identification number and date for the seller and any co-seller.

   Watch out: The notary block is completed by the notary during the session, and only if you signed in their presence with your printed name listed. A form signed first and notarised afterwards is not a remote notarisation.

What gets this one rejected

• •Used without the title. The form's own header requires the Montana title to accompany the application for title; this stands in for one section of it, not for the document.
• •Used for an in-person notarisation. The manual: this form can only be used for Remote Online Notary.
• •A mileage figure written in. There is no odometer block - the instruction sends a 2011-or-newer vehicle to an MV90A, and writing a reading in the margin is an alteration.
• •One owner's signature where the title carries two. The block says all owners must sign, and the manual's per-signature notary rule bites hardest here.
• •A notary completing the block without the signer present on the call. The form's own instruction: do not notarize or verify unless signed in your presence and printed name of applicant is listed.

Rules that decide whether it is accepted

• •It replaces one section, not the title. The manual: this form takes the place of the interest release section of the title. Everything else on the certificate is completed as normal.
• •Two worked situations. The manual gives both: one owner signs and notarises in person while a second who cannot attend uses this form remotely; or every owner uses it because none can sign in person.
• •It can stand alone or accompany a notarised title. The manual allows either - in conjunction with a notarised title, or as a stand-alone document.
• •Remote notarisation is barred on the title itself. Which is the entire reason the form exists: remote online notary is authorized on any document requiring notarization except for a title.
• •Separate days, separate acknowledgements. The manual's rule elsewhere still applies - where multiple sellers sign on different dates, a separate notary acknowledgement is required for each signature after the first, and witnesses are not accepted in place of one.
